This week, Ben Hawthorne, Head of Middle Years, sent a letter to parents of Year 7 students regarding the safe usage of social media. It serves as a timely reminder for all of us to be mindful of how we navigate platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, BReal, Instagram, and others. Whilst knowing the people we are sharing information with and having accounts set to private is essential, it's important to recognise that these measures are not foolproof.
Many individuals are unaware that once photos and information are posted on various social media platforms, they become the property of those companies. In essence, we lose control over our own images and information, even if we believe we've deleted them. They continue to exist elsewhere, beyond our ownership.
As Year 12 students embark on the next phase of their lives, exploring opportunities like universities, residential colleges, gap years, and jobs, it's crucial to understand that social media platforms are often scrutinized. Future employers will most likely search their online profile. My message to all students is to exercise great caution in what they share online.
Throughout the year levels, we're still addressing instances of inappropriate online behaviour. If your child encounters difficulties, the eSafety Commissioner serves as an invaluable resource for information and support.
