Double Debate Win for Mullauna

Mullauna’s success at Inter-School Debating last year was capped off on Thursday last week with two of our Class of 2023 taking out the prestigious

Debating Association of Victoria’s ‘Swannie’ awards.

Alex Sayle and Andrew Fankhauser won the award for best ‘A-Grade’ Debaters in the Ringwood Region. They took out the award after getting the same highest average speaker score. They were part of our A-grade debating team which reached the State Quarter Finals of the competition – the highest level Mullauna has ever achieved.

Matilda Ridgway and Casper-Potgieter-Strachan were also key members of the team.

The Swannie Award is named after Alan Swanwick, who was a

Pioneer of School Debating in Victoria.

Alex said that he and Andrew both felt “pretty good” at winning the award, outscoring many debaters from much bigger schools.

Alex has really caught the debating bug. This year he will take on the tough job of adjudicating inter-school debates. He won’t, however, be allowed to adjudicate any debate involving Mullauna.  We are confident that he will do well in this role.

Congratulations Alex and Andrew!
