Principal's Message

At Wembley Primary School, we acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which our school sits, the Woi-wurrung and Boonwurrung people of the South-Eastern Kulin Nation.

We celebrate and respect the oldest continuing culture and recognise the importance of education in truth telling, equity and justice.

We pay our respects to Elders past and present and recognise and value the learning that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, colleagues and community bring into our schools.

Term 2: Week 3-4 Update

Another week, and another PA system challenge at assembly! Thank goodness our School Captains practise every week, to ensure they are confident and prepared for whatever comes their way at assembly - no amount of static was going to stand in their way! Kristen was in touch with our electricians immediately after assembly, so we are awaiting their assessment, and will rectify the issue as quickly as possible.

We've already had a number of incursions and excursions this term: our Year 5s and Year 6s have visited Sovereign Hill, with once again glowing accounts of their behaviour and engagement on the experience - well done! Our Year 6s have also undertaken their city to the Treasury and Old Melbourne Gaol. This week our Prep classes visit the farm, to support their concept learning in biological sciences: Living things have a variety of features and live in different places. They grow, change and have offspring. At the same time, our Year 1 students will be walking to Cruickshank Part to support their investigation into special places and why they are important to our community.

Some of our Year 6 & Year 5 students have also been invited to participate in an enduring incursion this term; Iron Champions, with the Iron Armour Academy.  Iron Champions is a  group mentoring environment that creates positive social interactions by using the platform of exercise and sport to engage the students. Iron Champions is designed to provide tools that help build positive relationships and support ongoing resilience and self regulation, as well as support their engagement in learning.

A big thank you to our WPA, who have already been active this term with our Election Day sausage sizzle and the Mother's Day stall - which, together, attracted a profit of approximately, $6000. So, already we are progressing incredibly well towards our core goals this year:

  • Perimeter fencing on the South-Western corner of our site
  • Additional Shade Covering on our basketball court/assembly area

We have begun planning for a Twilight Fete in Term 4, in conjunction with our Prep - Year 4 musical performances and look forward to sharing further details with you in the coming weeks.

As well as planning for the major improvements mentioned above, Grant (our Grounds and Maintenance Manager) and I have begun the process of devising the school's maintenance plan, in line with our Rolling Facilities Evaluation. This will see us utilise parent contributions to our School Building Fund for the upkeep of various aspects of our buildings and grounds. We have identified a number of our older classrooms, which we will look at refreshing by replacing blinds, soft furnishings and re-painting. We thank our parents who have made a contribution to this fund, as it supports us in maintaining a high quality and presentable environment for our students. We will update you with further details as we finalise this plan.

We will partnering with our KESO (Koorie Engagement Support Officer) as we look to consider names for our Wellbeing Hub; this an example of one step we are taking to gradually increase our acknowledgement and inclusion of First Nations perspectives at Wembley. In line with this, our choir will perform at our assembly in Week 6 in acknowledgement of Reconciliation week - if any of our Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander parents and families would like to join our choir for this occasion, please reach out to our music teacher, Alison Briskey who would love for you to join in. Finally, we will also commence the process of community consultation over the naming of our 'new building' - after all, it can't be called 'the new build' forever!

Finally, our Diversity and Inclusion captains, along with their committee, have commenced a piece of collaborative art work with Ruth, our art teacher, in celebration of IDAHOBIT Day, which is this Saturday May 17. We will be encouraging students to wear 'a touch of rainbow' on Friday, however we will be saving our more notable acknowledgements and celebrations of this theme for Wear it Purple Day, which is later this year in August.

Wembley News

As part of our strategic plan to enhance student engagement and connectedness, our Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader, Simon Zammit, has commenced 'Wembley News' with a trial group of students this term.

The crew consists of script writers, interviewers, presenters and film and sound crew - once the trial has been undertaken Simon will consider how to open this opportunity up to a wider group of students.

The news program showcases student and teacher interviews, which focus on the latest events and important messages happening at the school.

Staff have been encouraged to show the news program to their students, but you can also access the show by following the subsequent link, and using your child's Wembley Google Login to access it.

General Reminders

Phonics & Take Home Readers: We shared information via Sentral in Week 3 about our approach to reading instruction and the inclusion of Phonics. As part of this communication we provided an update about our physical take home reading books.

School Council: Subcommittee meetings were held this week, and our School Council meeting will be held on Monday 19th May.

Student Led Conferences: Planned for Week 10 of the term - we will provide booking information by Week 6.

Curriculum Contributions/Parent Contributions: A BIG thank you to those families who have been able to pay their curriculum contributions - whilst voluntary - it makes an incredible difference to the functioning of the school. If you have not yet done so, and feel that you can, then you can do this via the Sentral parent portal or get in touch with the school office who can assist.

Student Pick Up Arrangements: a gentle request that parents ensure they remind their children of pick up arrangements each morning. We have had an increased number of students unsure as to where they are meeting parents, and/or parents changing pick up arrangements at last minute. If circumstances change, we are very happy to help - however, the more notice we get to inform the student, the better. This is particularly helpful when we have multiple adjustments to communicate. Thank you.
