Student Representative Council

2025 SRC

It's take a term, but we've finally selected our student reps for each double class from years 1/2, 3/4, and 5/6! It's a bit different this year, so read on to find out more! If you are particularly interested in democracy and representation, then you'll read every word, I'm sure! For everyone else.... just skim read if you're short on time!

Random selection

This year, all students were encouraged to nominate themselves if they were interested. They were reassured that they wouldn't need to give a speech or get voted on by peers.

Why?Sometimes students don't feel confident enough to nominate themselves as a student rep because they don't feel confident giving a speech in front of a class or they feel like someone 'more popular' will get voted for over them. This means that the more confident and extroverted students are over-represented in SRCs.

The SRC is meant to represent all students and reflect the diversity that we have in the school. When we hear from a more diverse array of students and include them in decision  making, we'll be able to take actions and make decisions that support a greater number of students.

How did you select the student reps?

I worked with the year 6 School Leaders to develop a nomination form that would allow us to screen the nominations before putting them in the draw. They gave a presentation to the whole school in assembly last Friday before distributing forms and envelopes on Monday.

Forms were collected and screened this Wednesday. Any students who didn't seem to be taking the opportunity seriously enough had their nomination slip removed. The Year 6 School Leaders along with two other witnesses from year 6 read each nomination form and run any 'rejections' by me. Two examples of nominations that were rejected are: a) if a student changed the checkboxes for "I promise to .... " to "I might ..." (see image of nomination slip in the banner at the top of the page; and b) if a student didn't answer each question.

The School Leaders came up with a very novel way to randomly select the student rep! All of the valid nomination forms for each double class (one double class at a time) were thrown up the air by one student, while everyone then tried to grab one or two forms as they fluttered down. The ones that fell to the floor were removed, while the rest went into the second stage - one person shuffled the papers with their eyes closed, then selected one paper. They opened up that paper and read out the name - and that was how the student rep for each double class was selected!

Drum roll please......

This year's SRC will be made up of the following students:

1/2AB - Carolina

1/2CD - Grace

1/2EF - Apollo

3/4AB - Isla P

3/4CD - Vera

3/4EF - Autumn

5/6AB - Nelly

5/6CD - Eddie

What will they do this year?

We will be getting support from VicSRC including being part of their Teach the Teacher program for the first time, which is very exciting! The SRC will meet at least once per month at play time. We will do our best to make sure that students are supported to have a positive impact on the school in a way that is led by the students on an issue that they collectively decide upon.

Why aren't Foundation students able to be in the SRC?

Foundation students have a very big year settling into school routines, expectations, and going through a huge learning curve! It's important that they settle into school, see how things are run, observe the SRC and other student leaders before diving into student leadership themselves.
