Principal's Message

Mr Bill Innes | Interim Principal

With the mid-term break fast approaching and the Semester One assessments and reports looming on the horizon, I want to take our focus off the academics for a moment and share some thoughts on the subject of school culture.

School culture is a dynamic phenomenon – and it is very vulnerable to change.

As the TKC community, comprising of families, students and staff, we rely upon one another to share and uphold the values and expectations reflected in our College’s Christ-focused value statements.

Beginning in Term One, we placed a strong focus on uniform compliance. My sincere appreciation goes to all parents who have joined us on this journey by upholding college expectations from the moment your children leave home to the moment they re-enter your home in the afternoon. In this way, our students become our most visible and effective ambassadors.

In Semester Two, we are going to place a focus on Courtesy

By way of explanation:

  • As a Christ-centred school, we serve a God of love
  • Love is manifested in our relationships with one another.
  • Our relationships are built on a foundation of positive communications –  in other words, the way we greet one another, the way we speak to one another, and the way we interact with one another.

Some observations during my brief time at the College:

  • Very few students acknowledge adults as they pass one another in the College. (My deep and sincere appreciation to those students who do share a smile and a greeting in passing – it is such a simple gesture, but it has such great value!)
  • Some students can be pretty cruel to one another in their conversations. (not to mention on social media, where they can hide behind the anonymity of a screen.)
  • Unfortunately, I have to mention too, that a number of my staff have had to absorb some deeply-unrelational abuse from parents. Many of these incidents occur in the busy-ness and frustration of the daily pick-up and drop-off, where staff are simply doing their best to control traffic flow, in order to keep our children safe.

Beginning in Semester Two, we want to ensure that our whole community is committed to reflecting God’s love towards one another – cheerful greetings, conversations aimed at maintaining positive relationships, patience and understanding – these are the things that will see us building positive, enduring relationships that will bind us together as a community.

But why wait until then? Let’s start today!

Bill Innes
