Who is MECS?

Excited squealing, fist bumps, great Dad jokes and random trivia all before 9am. That is a part of it. A place where your child is known, and the staff work together to bring out their best. That’s important. A place that is more than just nurturing, where we have ‘real kids and real learning’.  I’m excited to be a part of a school like that.

And for those that don’t have the behind-the-scenes privilege that I do, here are some of my recent highlights:

Watching a Year 4 student carefully carrying a spider on a leaf back to the bushes all the while watching in awe at its intricate movements. That’s an Awe Dweller—a child who finds joy and amazement in God’s creation and is fully present in the moment.

Seeing a group of Year 6s willing to sacrifice their lunch break so that they can lead our Lower Primary GTs (Get Togethers), guiding their younger peers in dance routines and games. That’s a Community Builder—young people stepping up to create connections and bring others together, regardless of their age.

Hearing a parent, who is a recent immigrant to Australia, share about their first 18 months. They spoke about the sense of belonging they’ve received from the wider MECS community. That’s a group of Welcoming Advocates—people who ensure others feel seen, heard, and valued, especially when they’re navigating difficult times.

Watching a mother and daughter walking around picking up pieces of rubbish, not because they were asked to, but simply because they believe it’s the right thing to do. They are Creation Keepers—individuals who take responsibility for the world around them and actively contribute to its well-being.

A student who, during a class discussion, respectfully questions the fairness of a rule, asking why it’s in place and whether it could be adjusted to better support everyone.

That’s a Truth Discerner—a child who seeks honesty, transparency, and fairness, encouraging others to think critically about the world around them.

The child that runs up to the duty teacher to ask them for help in sorting out a playground issue. They didn’t just want to be heard; they sought a solution that was fair and just for everyone involved. That’s a Justice Seeker—a student who works toward resolving conflict and ensuring equity in their environment.

The students who walk into their class each morning, grab a book, find a quiet space and settle into a peaceful reading spot without being asked. Their love of learning and their ability to create their own space for reflection and growth is inspiring. They are Purposeful Learners—students who take ownership of their learning and approach each day with intention and focus.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate the MECS community and the ‘real learning’ that occurs every day.
