Wheel Talk Incursion

Year 11 PE

In Physical Education Unit 2, Area of Study 2, we have been discussing both intrapersonal issues in sport and interpersonal issues in sport over the last few weeks of class. Amongst a range of discussion points, one of the interpersonal issues we discussed in class relates to enabling sport to be available for everyone, including those with disabilities.

As part of this, we invited Peter from Disability of Sport and Recreation in Victoria to come in and share stories and experiences. Along with sharing some his story, he brought in equipment for students to experience a game of wheelchair basketball. It was a valuable experience that created a rich learning environment for students to gain a deeper understanding of how everyone in community can be involved in sport together.

The Wheel Talk incursion would by far have to be the best P.E class I've ever attended. The class was run by Pete Ogunyemi who was such an amazing inspiration for me. Not only did he have such a powerful, resilient and extremely determined story, he was absolutely hilarious and it was an absolute joy to be in his presence. My class and I were very fortunate to experience how Pete lives his everyday life through wheelchair basketball which we all enjoyed so much! The main message that I took away from this incursion is that you can do absolutely anything you put your mind to and to wake up every day and appreciate the amazing bodies that we have that can do so many things. Pete is truly a role model for me and has impacted my perspective on life.
