FRIAR'S TUCKSHOP

Understanding initialing of the canteen menu

Here's a breakdown of what the initials mean:

  • EF - Everyday Food: These are foods that should form the basis of a healthy diet. They are typically:
    • From the core five food groups (vegetables, fruits, grains, lean meats/alternatives, dairy/alternatives).
    • Lower in saturated fat, added sugar, and salt.
    • Generally encouraged to be eaten regularly as part of a balanced diet.
  • ES - Everyday Snack: Similar to EF, these are snack options that are healthy and can be consumed daily. They would align with the same principles of being from core food groups and lower in unhealthy components.
  • OF - Occasional Food: These are foods that are higher in saturated fat, added sugar, and/or salt. While they can be enjoyed, they should be consumed in moderation and less frequently. They are sometimes referred to as "discretionary choices."
  • OS - Occasional Snack: Similar to OF, these are snacks that should be limited due to their higher content of unhealthy ingredients. Examples could include processed snacks, sugary drinks, or confectionery.

How they help make healthy choices easier:

This system is designed to simplify healthy eating guidelines for students, parents, and canteen staff. Instead of needing to know complex nutritional information, they can quickly identify:

  • What to choose most often: Look for EF and ES.
  • What to limit: Be mindful of OF and OS.

This approach aligns with national dietary guidelines, like the Australian Dietary Guidelines, which promote a diet rich in "Everyday Foods" and limit "discretionary choices" (Occasional Foods).
