Well done and a big congratulations to all our Foundation students on completing 100 days of school! From the very first day our little learners have made leaps and bounds in their development. They have been introduced to the magical world of letters, words, sounds, numbers, shapes, counting, creativity, imagination, research, friendships and social/emotional wellbeing. They have inquired and built a deeper understanding into a range of topics and questions, such as, how are we connected? How are toys made? And how dothe changes in weather affect our environment?
We believe that our students have formed a wide range of friendships and shown kindness within a positive learning environment. They have learned to share, help one another and resolve conflict with empathy and understanding. It is has been a great opportunity to reflect and celebrate their compassion and the way they've formed lasting friendships.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the parents, families and guardians who have been actively involved in their child's learning journey. Your support and collaboration have been invaluable in creating a nurturing and engaging environment for our students.
Lastly, a big thank you to our wonderful Foundation teachers! Your commitment and care for all students has been a big reason for all their success. It's incredible to witness their growth and enthusiasm as they continue to develop their foundational skills and embrace the joy of learning. We cannot wait to see what happens in the future and let's continue to make learning an inspiring adventure!
A big thank you to the parents and families who assisted moving and digging such large amounts of soil to help prepare our Kitchen Garden Program. It is so exciting to see this fantastic vision starting to take shape we are so lucky to provide our students with such a fantastic learning opportunity for many years to come!
Today all of the year sixes had a presentation by an architect named Carmen. She told us all about passive houses and how they are designed. It was a fantastic experience and we all learned a lot. Some of the things that she talked about were insulation, heating, and covering. She told us how there are different types of insulation and she spoke about the ways it works, keeping heat inside a house. We are so glad to have gotten this opportunity to learn from an expert architect!
Carmen told us that 43% of energy used in an average house comes from heating or cooling. This shows that houses in Australia are not made very well. They are usually too cold in winter and too hot in summer. She talked about how to help a house keep its temperature it needs to be fully covered. There shouldn’t be any way for the outside air to get inside the house. In some older houses the windows only have single glazing. Nowadays it is mandatory for a house to have double glazing but good quality passive houses should have a triple glazing. If your house has a single glazing then it is easier for air from inside to get colder from escaping outdoors. Houses with double or triple glazing have insulation between the layers of window panes. This means that the air inside will stay warmer.
The year sixes are very grateful to Carmen for this incursion because this term we will be drawing a diagram and building a miniature passive house. Our houses will have to be sustainable and they will have to be suitable for the area that they would be situated in. Some of us will design houses for polar environments where it is often snowy and cold, while others will design houses for tropical areas where it is very hot and humid. Carmen’s presentation has helped us understand how we can design a passive, sustainable house that could be comfortable whatever the situation might be.
