Literacy
We are rolling through our onder Novel nicely. Our Literacy sessions are packed with reading, listening, writing responses, talking through situations as a class and with a partner and then sharing. It's pretty intense! But it is such a moving story and I'm sure that this study will not only improve the literacy skills of our students, but have a positive effect on how we view people by getting to know what's on the inside.
Numeracy
Fractions! Decimals! Percentages! and how they are related is our focus in numeracy over thr next couple of weeks. It's a difficult skill to master, but when you are looking for a bargin, these are the skills you need!
In the applied side of things we are still looking at angles and working out the unknown angles with the information that they have been given. Even if you are as handy as a man short, (as my dad would describe my handyman skills!) this knowledge is always going to come in handy throughout life.
Inquiry
This term, the students will research a non-renewable and renewable source of electricity and share their findings with others. They will explore how electrical circuits work and investigate conductors and insulators of electricity using simple electrical circuit materials. We've had a lot of fun creating circuits this week using fans, buzzers, lights and motors. I'm sure that there are a couple of future electricians among us!
Students will learn about a day in the life of an
electrician through a guest speaker or video and act as electricians to construct a cardboard
box house with working lights.
Well-Being
The staff were working hard on Friday at their curriculum day where we finished our four part training of the Berry Street Education Model. Friday's session concentrated on 'Character' and how we can identify the Character traits that are students are displaying, educating them on how to promote the traits that they are underutilizing and how to enhance the ones that they display most often.
The implementation of the Berry Street Education Model has seen such a positive effect on our students and how they treat each day. They have learnt to self-reguate their behaviour and get themselves ready to learn and so much more. We have seen less conflict and and better academic results since we have employed this model.
This week the Grade 6’s participated in the National Week of Action: Bullying No Way! They completed posters and role play with the aim to build a shared understanding of what bullying is – and what it isn’t – so that we all start with the same knowledge and language. This is the first step in our year-long Bullying Prevention and Education program, which will include further learning sessions, an incursion, and special awareness days such as Daisy Day. It was a great opportunity for our students to learn, share, and take positive action towards creating a safe and respectful school community.
Until next time, all the best from the Grade 6 teaching team of Ms. Grant, Mr. Keenan and Mr. Taberner
