What's happening in our classroom?

Literacy

This term we will be exploring a non-fiction unit of learning in Literacy titled, Into the Unknown. This unit of learning will focus on Australian History and more specifically, early explorers. We will be learning about what motivated people to explore and who some of the important explorers were. Students will learn about the importance of trade during this time period and the settlement of Australia as a penal colony.

Through this lense students will be learning new vocab, practising their fluency and developing their comprehension skills by reading and discussing non-fiction texts.

Numeracy

Over the coming weeks students will be learning multiplication and division as part of our maths learning. This will include a focus on partitioning two-digit numbers into tens and ones and how to use an area model or vertical algorithm to solve multiplication problems.

This term we will also be spending time exploring angles as part of our maths learning. This will involve students learning how to name angles and classify them as acute, obtuse, right, straight and reflex.

    Inquiry

This term our Inquiry unit is called, Types of Forces. This unit will involve students learning about different types of forces and how they are exerted.

Some essential questions from this unit include:

  • What are some samples of forces?

  • How can we harness the power of the wind?

  • What is friction and how is it used in everyday objects?

  • What is magnetism and how is it used in everyday objects?

Celebration of Learning

Inquiry Learning

Recently students learnt about different types of forces by conducting simple investigations in small groups and using their discoveries to categorise forces.

Bullying - No Way!

This week the Year 4's participated in the National Week of Action: Bullying No Way! They completed an activity with the aim to build a shared understanding of what bullying is – and what it isn’t – so that we all start with the same knowledge and language. This is the first step in our year-long Bullying Prevention and Education program, which will include further learning sessions, an incursion, and special awareness days such as Daisy Day. It was a great opportunity for our students to learn, share, and take positive action towards creating a safe and respectful school community.
