Upcoming Learning

Literacy

In Phonics, we will begin by reviewing the prefix un-and the suffix -ing, along with the important spelling rules that apply: such as doubling the final consonant and dropping the  e. Following this, we’ll move on to explore the suffixes -s, -es, and -er. Students will learn how these suffixes change the meaning of words and practice the spelling rules associated with them, including when to double consonants or drop the ewhen adding

-er.

In Writing, we will continue developing our narrative pieces inspired by The Stone Lion by Margaret Wild. Students will experiment with changing key elements of the narrative structure, such as creating their own stone creature, altering the setting, exploring character feelings, and reimagining the problem, events, solution, and ending. They will also work on imitating the author’s style in key parts of the story while applying their knowledge of parts of speech, including adjectives and pronouns, to enhance their writing.

Numeracy

  • Students will continue building their addition and subtraction skills, focusing on strategies for solving two-digit equations, such as partitioning into tens and ones.
  • We will then begin exploring multiplication and division through key concepts like doubling, halving, arrays, and repeated addition and subtraction.
  • We will continuing our understanding of location and directional language, before moving on to explore mass and capacity.

Wellbeing

This week the Grade 2's participated in the National Week of Action: Bullying No Way! They listened to the story Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes and participated in an activity where they scrunched up their paper hearts each time characters used mean words and tried to smooth them out when Chrysanthemum’s parents used kind words,  building a shared understanding of what bullying is and what it isn’t, so that everyone starts with the same knowledge and language. This is the first step in our year-long Bullying Prevention and Education program, which will include further learning sessions, an incursion, and special awareness days such as Daisy Day. It was a great opportunity for our students to learn, share, and take positive action towards creating a safe and respectful school community.  Check out the pics below!

We have noticed that our Grade 2 Cohort are wandering during playtime and not engaging in games or activities. We plan to set up some games and activities for Grade 2 students during recess and lunch and are on the hunt for some donations such as blocks, cars, dolls, figurines. If you want to make some space at home, we will gladly take them off your hands so PLEASE send them our way!

Inquiry - Use of Earth's Resources

Students will learn about the importance of water, energy and soil, three of Earth's most important resources. They will consider how they use water, where water comes from, and how we can conserve it. They will take part in a water filtration experiment to learn about how water is treated. Students will investigate ways to conserve energy and the importance of soil for sustaining life. They will become soil detectives and examine different soil samples. Take a look at some of the amazing posters we created to highlight different water saving strategies.
