Friday 8th August is the feast day of our very first Australian saint, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop. St Mary of the Cross is particularly special to us at St Louis’ because we belong to the Parish of St Mary of the Cross.
Mary MacKillop, also known as Saint Mary of the Cross, was an Australian nun who founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, the first religious order to be founded by an Australian. She was born in Fitzroy, Melbourne, on January 15, 1842, and dedicated her life to serving the poor and marginalized through education and social work. She was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 2010. Mary was a woman who believed that God loved her very much, and that God loved all people and all of creation. In 1906 Mary said: “God loves us all.”
Throughout her life, Mary tried to show others how much God loved them.
She was especially kind to people; always willing to forgive those who hurt her; spoke the truth, was respectful and just. It did not matter to Mary what age, nationality, religion, rich or poor, clean or dirty, happy or sad, sick or healthy a person was, everyone was always welcome.
Mary was a person of action and didn’t wait for someone to knock on her door. She loved the poor and worked hard to care for them in any way that she could. Mary shows us how to open our eyes and ears, our hearts and our minds to the needs of others. She shows us how to serve others with kindness, love and understanding.
Let Us Pray…
Loving and gracious God, you loved and cared for your servant, Mary.
Help us to follow her example and look for ways that we can help others. May we be people of action, people of generosity and people of kindness willing to reach out to those who need our care and support.
We ask this prayer in Jesus’ name.
Amen.
On Sunday, many of our Year 6 students will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please keep these young people in your prayers, that their hearts may be fully open to receive all of the grace that the Lord has for them and that it may bear abundant fruit in their lives.
