Servant Leadership
This term, our Year 6 leaders are taking part in the Servant Leadership program. All Grade 6 students are completing five tasks over five weeks to give back to our community. Some of the things we’ve done so far include picking up rubbish in our streets, cooking meals for the homeless with Br Michaal, visiting the Fr Bob Foundation, Visiting Caspacar and helping the Preps with their sport lessons. We’ve really enjoyed the experience so far and can’t wait to keep giving back and making a difference in our community!

Street Clean Up
On Friday , my group and I went to South Melbourne to help clean up rubbish as part of our school's servant leadership program. We walked around the streets, parks, and footpaths with gloves, tongs and rubbish bags, collecting things like bottles, wrappers, cans, and other litter. It was a really fun day overall. We were outside, walking around with our friends, and it felt good knowing we were helping the environment, even if it was just by picking up rubbish. A few people walking by said thanks or gave us a smile, which made the whole thing feel a bit more worthwhile. It’s not something we do every day, so it was great to do something different from normal school work and actually help out in a simple way. By the end, we had filled quite a few bags and the area looked cleaner than when we started. It was a good team effort, and even though we were tired, it felt like the day was worth it.

Cooking
Every Friday, Year 6’s participate in Servant Leadership, which is when every week, we do different activities like cooking for the church kitchen, cleaning up rubbish from the street, going to the Fr Bob Maguire Foundation and lots more. This is something that we do to help our community and make a difference. This week, I was making sausage rolls with my group, Brother Michael and Priska for the Friars Kitchen, behind the church. These sausage rolls would go to people who often go hungry without the Friars Kitchen. We all gathered in the Makerspace, and each had a job like grating the vegetables, preparing the pastry, mixing the meat, rolling up the sausage rolls or putting them in the oven to bake. We ended up making over a hundred sausage rolls! Though, only around 85 made it to the church after the delicious smell wafting through the corridors attracted teachers, students and other hungry staff members who were considered our taste testers. They happily declared that the sausage rolls were delicious! A big thank you to Brother Michael and Priska for helping us with such a great initiative and their continuous support towards the Friars Kitchen. It was a really fun activity and a great way to make a difference in our community!

Father Bob Foundation
On Friday our group walked to the Father Bob Foundation with Mr. Kelly. Paul showed us around the place. There were plenty of things including a -20° freezer that had pre-made meals, some of us went inside for a second and it was freezing. The freezer is used for foods like meat and chicken to keep frozen so when people have nothing the brothers and sisters can come heat up their food then the unfortunate can collect it. There were lots of things to support people like tooth brushes and toilet paper. The food was sorted into different boxes like vegetables and fruits. The people there were so nice and caring for other people, they gave up all their free time for people in need. We saw 3 other people helping out there, not including Paul. They were very kind and caring. One of the sisters was making cheesy toasties for people who didn't have food to eat. When we were about to leave we thanked Paul and everyone else that was kindly helping out, then gave them cards we made the day before for them.
Thank you.

CaspaCare
On the 25th of July, our group of ten went to CaspaCare to run a trivia activity with the elderly. We had to leave school early and walk to Casper Care. It was about a 10-minute walk. When we arrived, we were greeted kindly by the receptionist. We went up in the elevator and walked into a nice room with relaxing music playing. We waited there while everyone arrived.Once everyone was there, we set up 35 trivia questions. There were around 30 residents and the questions were from different categories like AFL, music, movies, and even a special category with questions about them. In the end, I think we all had a great time. It was a really fun and meaningful experience.

Prep Sport
During our student leadership session on Friday, Prep B joined us for a fun afternoon of games and activities. Ava, Lily E and Jessica from Year 6 led the session and made sure everyone felt included and excited to join in.
We began by introducing ourselves, and then Lily explained how to play our first game, Fruit Salad. It was definitely the most popular game. We played about four rounds, and the Preps were full of energy and laughter as they crossed the finish line. After that, we moved on to other games like Farmer Sam, Everybody’s It, and Night at the Museum. The Preps had a great time and tried their best in each activity. We made sure to support them and keep things fun and fair. Overall, it was a really enjoyable session. It gave us a chance to show our leadership, help the younger students, and most importantly, have fun together. We’re already looking forward to the next leadership session!

Richard B Southern Regional Cross Country Recap
On the 24th of July l headed to state schools cross county to compete in the 2000 metre or 2 kilometre race.
It was at the Yarra Glen Race Course which is a horse racing track in the Yarra Valley. It took 1 and a half hours to get there. When my Dad and I got there we went to the registration area to collect my race bib. My racing number was 350.
Since we were there so early we decided to walk the course so I became familiar with it. The course was very flat which was good - not too many hills!
Next, I went over to the warming up area to do some drills and stretching to get my legs nice and warm. Then my race was only thirty minutes away so we walked up to the stands to watch the races before me. Then after watching 2 races they called “9/10 boys please marshal for the 2000 meters”.
When they called us l felt nervous and excited at the same time. I put on my music I listen to before I race, which is Def Leppard to calm down but also get pumped up. When l was in the place where they called us l felt very nervous but all l had to focus on was running my own race. Finally they took us out to the start line.
The really annoying thing was that if you won your Regional Championship you got to start at the front row and if you came second in your region you got to start in the second row and all the way up to 12th so because l came 10th it meant l had to start with 80 people in front of me which was a pain. The starter called “on your marks…set…BANG” and we were off, all 108 of us all tight and together. I remember at the start a few people fell over! Luckily I wasn’t one of them.
When we hit the first corner l was coming about 40th and already my legs were hurting but l just kept pushing and after about 1.5 kilometres l was coming 30th which meant l had overtaken 50 people and in the last 100 meters l was coming 23rd and l was pretty satisfied with my performance.
l felt very proud to represent Galilee at The State Cross Country Championships. It was a great day at the track.
