Grade 5

Literacy
Over the past two weeks, our students have continued their journey with Indigenous Australian stories by exploring the sequel to Black Cockatoo, titled Dirrarn. This powerful follow-up has deepened their connection to the rich storytelling traditions of First Nations people. Additionally, students have been learning about Jandomarra, a respected First Nations leader from the Kimberley region. Through his story, they’ve gained insight into leadership, resilience and cultural heritage. These explorations continue to enhance students’ understanding and respect for Indigenous perspectives while developing their literacy skills through discussion, analysis and creative responses.
Mathematics
In the past two weeks, students have transitioned to exploring decimals. They've been learning about place values up to the thousandths, comparing and ordering decimal numbers and locating them on a number line. Through engaging activities and problem-solving exercises, students are developing a solid understanding of how decimals function in real-world contexts, enhancing their mathematical fluency.
Humanities
Building upon our previous discussions in Civics and Citizenship, students have been further exploring the principles of democracy and active citizenship. They've engaged in discussions and activities that deepen their understanding of democratic values, the roles of government and the importance of informed participation in society. These experiences are fostering a sense of responsibility and empowerment as students learn about their roles within a democratic community.
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
This week, students participated in a workshop led by Project Rockit, which is a youth-driven organisation against bullying, hate and prejudice. The session focused on empowering students to challenge bullying behaviors, both online and offline, and to promote kindness and inclusivity within their school community. Through interactive discussions and activities, students developed strategies to respond to bullying and learned the importance of being active bystanders who stand up against harmful behaviors. Project Rockit’s approach emphasises empathy, respect and the power of positive action in creating a supportive and safe environment for all students.
