Grade 3 & 4

Term 2 - Week 6

We have been helping Atto out these past few weeks with what is a life cycle - growing seeds in different locations to see what they need to grow. There are seven characteristics that a living thing  needs to grow - movement, grow, eat, reproduce, breathe or respire, excrete waste and have senses.

The students have planted lupins in plastic bags which have been placed on the windows to see how they grow - some students have measured theirs and so far they are a variety of lengths - 5cms, 6cms and even 7cms. Another experiment was growing wheat in cotton wool, however, the students have found these not to be as successful with a variety of reasons as to why.

Next week we are walking to the Wimmera River to observe different habitats and a different ecosystem to see what living or non-living things are found there.

In maths, the groups have been working on the conversion of formal units of measurement - millimetres to centimetres, centimetres to metres and then to kilometres. The students had to problem solve the planting of a garden - measure the plot to fit in different plants. It was lots of fun!

Our interest has been spiked with the reading of 'The Dream of the Thylacine,' what is the real story behind the demise of the thylacine or Tasmanian Tiger. This has created great discussion as to whether it is really extinct or just hasn't been found for many years. There is some great writing about it.
