Students on Safari! Year 1 Melbourne Zoo excursion

On Thursday the 12th of June, the Year 1 students went on an exciting excursion to the Royal Melbourne Zoo. During our visit, students had the opportunity to explore a variety of animal habitats, including the Lion Gorge, Butterfly House, Gorilla Rainforest and Wild Sea.

Highlights of the day included watching seals glide gracefully through the water, observing the social behaviours of the gorilla family and being surrounded by the vibrant fluttering of butterflies.

Throughout the tour, students were encouraged to stop, observe closely, and discuss their observations. They showed great curiosity, asked thoughtful questions, and displayed excellent behaviour — we were incredibly proud of them!

Apart from the opportunity to treat our lovely Year 1s to a day of exploring, this excursion linked to their learning in a big way, the students were aware of the purpose and goals for their trip.

Learning Intention:

We are learning to identify different animals, understand their basic needs, and describe the environments they live in

Success Criteria:

- Identify animals and the habitat they come from

-Explain what these animals need to survive

-Ask questions and share observations about animals and their features

Back at school, students reflected on their experiences through writing and drawing, producing creative and insightful pieces of work that captured the excitement of the day.

A big thank you to our wonderful parent volunteers who supported us by guiding groups and helping the day run smoothly. We also extend our gratitude to our fantastic student teacher Miss Fariha, for her energy and support throughout the excursion.

It was a day full of hands-on learning, exploration, and unforgettable moments — one we’re sure the students will remember for a long time!

Milo’s Surprise Party

Last Friday, our Foundation students celebrated a very special milestone - Milo’s Birthday! As part of the Little Learners Love Literacy program, students have been introduced to Milo and his friends while learning all the single letter sounds (phonemes) and graphemes of the alphabet.

In the story, Milo invited his friends - like Sally the Snake, Kylie the Koala, Ben the Bear, Jack the Jellyfish, Wilbur the Whale, and Ally the Alligator - to his birthday, but they initially couldn’t make it. In a delightful twist, they surprised him with a big party at the end of the book! To mark the completion of learning all 26 letters, our students joined the celebration by dressing up as their favourite Milo characters.

The day was filled with engaging literacy and decoding activities, including CVC word blending, and ended with a joyful costume parade. Each class showcased their outfits in a safe and lively event that brought smiles to all. To add to the excitement, students also created their own character face masks to wear as part of their costumes. With their colourful masks and creative outfits, they truly brought the Little Learners Love Literacy characters to life by making the celebration even more vibrant and memorable.

Special thanks to Sukhman Dahiya for organising the parade in such a safe and orderly manner!

What a wonderful way to celebrate a big step in our literacy journey!

Foundation Taskworks Incursion

The Taskworks Foundation Incursion was a great success last Thursday! Greg and Rebecca brought a truck load of S.T.E.M-based, hands-on materials and activities for our students to engage with.

They disassembled and reassembled both a robot and a go-cart, focusing on the skill of screwing and unscrewing nuts and bolts.

They challenged their motor skills to stay as steady as possible through an arcade-type game. They used the power of push/pull and levers to lift each other on chairs. They built racecourses for circles on magnetic boards.

Throughout all of these experiences, Foundation students used their social skills to work as a team to solve the problems presented.

Well done!

Exploring the Arctic in 3D - Year 2 visit to IMAX

On Wednesday 11th of June, our excited Year 2 students boarded the bus and headed into the heart of Melbourne for a special excursion to IMAX. This outing was part of our current unit in English, where we are learning how to write information reports.

What better way to inspire young writers than by immersing them in a real-life learning experience?

At IMAX, we had the opportunity to watch Arctic 3D - a visually stunning documentary that took us on a journey through the icy landscapes of the North. Students were amazed by the incredible animals, extreme weather conditions, and the breathtaking views shown in the film.

The 3D experience made it feel like we were actually there, walking through snow and spotting polar bears in the wild! This film helped students gather real facts about the Arctic, which they used back at school to write a recount. It also sparked thoughtful conversations about climate, wildlife, and how people live in such cold environments.

Aside from the learning, the students loved the experience of travelling into the city with their classmates, enjoying lunch together, and trying something new. It was a day full of discovery, fun, and inspiration. We are so proud of how respectful and responsible our students were throughout the day.

Thank you to the staff and parent helpers who supported the excursion - we couldn't have done it without you!
