News - from Chris and Mel in the kitchen & garden

Our cooking and gardening classes are each Tuesday

We would love to have more volunteers in both the garden and kitchen classes.

No garden or kitchen skills required, enthusiasm to support the students as they learn is all you need.

If you would like to know more, come into the office and see Chris (Principal)

This week in Cooking, Grade 5 and 6 celebrated silverbeet and spinach from the garden and made Spinach and Cheese Triangles, Potato and Silverbeet Torte and a delicious Tomato Sauce to serve with the dishes.

From the garden we used silverbeet, parsley, mint and bay leaves and from the freezer we used tomato passata, frozen spinach and silverbeet.

Scott worked with his group to make the Spinach and Cheese Triangles.  They used the spinach and silverbeet they harvested in a previous garden session and we blanched and froze. Lizzie, Grace, James and their group prepared and chopped the herbs and silverbeet. Elsie and their group measured and grated the different cheeses. Then they added and mixed in the extra cheeses, eggs and mixed the ingredients well. They then worked together to cut the puff pastry into triangles and determine how much filling was needed for each triangle. They learnt how to carefully fold the triangle shape and use a fork to carefully seal each parcel.  After adding an egg wash they cooked the triangles until they were golden brown.

Javien washed and used the salad spinner to dry all the silverbeet and herbs for the groups.

Lee-Anne worked with Lenny, Tahj, Andrew and their group to make a delicious Tomato Sauce using the Tomato Passata they made in a previous class. They carefully peeled and cut the apples, grated the ginger and cut the garlic finely.  They also learnt how to measure out each of the spices.  They worked as a team to watch the sauce and Lenny made sure they carefully stirred the sauce until it was cooked.

Sophia, Levi, Dante and their team made the pastry for the Potato and Silverbeet Tortes and while it was resting they chopped the onions, cut the silverbeet and potatoes and grated the cheeses for the  filling.

Sophia also made some more pastry for the extra pie Elsie’s group made with the leftover filling from the Spinach and Cheese Triangles.

After recess everyone worked together to knead and roll out the dough for the Potato and Silverbeet Tortes. They learnt how to take their time to roll and turn the dough to roll it into a circle for the base and top of the pies.

After the Potato and Silverbeet Tortes were filled and in the oven, the groups cleaned up, washed the dishes and set the tables.

As we shared the dishes, we discussed the flavours and what we enjoyed about the food they cooked.

Some students wrote up on the board what they thought about their cooking, this is what they wrote…

We made Spinach and Cheese Triangles and learnt not to rush.  Anon

I felt in this session we were locked in and really tried hard, more than usual. Also I love how much cheese was in this meal. James

Great job on the dishes Levi and Anais. Chris

The sauce is sweet and sour and you can taste the tomato. Lenny, Andrew and Tahj

The triangles were really crispy.  The spinach and cheese filling was really good, we should make them again!. Lizzie

The sauce was so good! Scott

I feel in this session we rushed at the start. But then we eased in and just had fun working together. Anais

I felt we worked well as a team to make yum food. Levi

Well done Grade 5 and 6 on your great cooking and teamwork and thanks Scott and Lee-Anne.
