Beacon Incursion
Two groups of 25 Year 8 students opted-in to take part in the Beacon: Prepare workshop. This workshop was an engaging and insightful session focused on building career awareness and personal development. Throughout the workshop, students explored key concepts such as first impressions, stereotypes, and transferable skills.
A highlight of the day was hearing from a diverse group of volunteers, including firefighters, insurance brokers, legal professionals, and others, who shared their personal career journeys. These stories helped students understand the varied paths to success and the importance of challenging stereotypes and societal expectations.
The workshop also emphasised the relevance of transferable skills and how these abilities developed at school, can be applied in the workplace. Students left with a clearer understanding of how the skills they are building now can support their future careers.
Overall, the incursion provided valuable insights and inspiration, encouraging students to think broadly about their futures and the many possibilities available to them.
ACED
Our ACED Year 10–12 students recently took part in an exciting camp packed with engaging and enriching experiences. Over several days, students explored Melbourne’s vibrant city. Despite some scheduling conflicts that occurred with the University of Melbourne the camp was an overall success. Students showed exemplary behaviour in public and worked well together during the two days. They overcame challenges with dedication, and worked hard to complete an Art and Culture themed scavenger hunt that sent them around federation square to appreciate all the different types of art that Melbourne has to offer. The information/careers talk at Fortress also proved valuable as they learned about all the different types of jobs that come with working in the gaming industry, from engineers to laser experts and general carpenters.
ACED Maths Incursion – Escape Room Challenge
On Wednesday 28 May, students in the ACED program (7C, 8C and 9C) participated in an exciting maths incursion with an "Escape Room" theme. Working in teams, students tackled a series of challenging enrichment maths problems to solve clues and unlock the escape. It was a fun and engaging experience that sparked problem-solving, collaboration and lots of enthusiasm!
Discover the World of Biology through Dissection!
In the past few weeks, students have had the exciting opportunity to dive into hands-on learning through dissection. This immersive experience allowed them to explore a variety of specimens, including sheep hearts, fish, squid, prawns, mussels, and even flowers. By carefully dissecting these organisms, students gained a firsthand look at how organs and body systems function and interact. For example, they observed the way blood flows through the chambers of the sheep heart, examined the structure of a squid and explored the intricate anatomy of flowers to better understand how plants reproduce.
Dissection provides a fun, interactive approach to learning anatomy, allowing students to connect what they study in textbooks with the real-world structure and function of living things. It helps deepen their understanding by offering a tactile experience that brings abstract concepts to life. This hands-on approach not only makes biology come alive but also sparks curiosity and encourages students to ask more questions about the natural world around them.
Year 7 Classification, vertebrate and invertebrate, flower dissections
Year 8 – Heart dissection
Year 9 – Fish ( Spinal cord ) and Sheep Brain dissection
Year 9 Food Technology Heats Up the Kitchen
This week in Food Technology, our Year 9 students have been busy developing their culinary skills with two delicious dishes that brought both creativity and teamwork to the forefront.
The 9G girls rolled up their sleeves and cooked a hearty spaghetti bolognese, mastering the art of balancing flavours, cooking pasta to perfection, and preparing a rich, savoury meat sauce from scratch. They demonstrated fantastic collaboration and attention to detail, with the kitchen filled with the mouth-watering aroma of Italian comfort food.
Meanwhile, the 9A boys took on the challenge of making calzone, a folded pizza pocket filled with a variety of savoury ingredients. From preparing the dough to stuffing and sealing each calzone, the boys showed great enthusiasm and precision. Their final products were golden, crisp, and packed with flavour.
Both classes have shown impressive progress in their understanding of food preparation, kitchen safety, and presentation
Year 11 Food Studies Excursion – Aboriginal Heritage Walk at the Royal Botanic Gardens
On Wednesday the 21st of May, our Year 11 Food Studies students recently enjoyed a rich and engaging excursion to the Royal Botanic Gardens, where they participated in an Aboriginal Heritage Walk. Students explored the traditions, culture, and deep connection to land held by the First Nations people. The walk provided valuable insight into how native plants have been used for thousands of years for food, medicine, and tools. A highlight of the day was tasting lemon myrtle, a fragrant native ingredient, and exploring its culinary and cultural significance. This immersive experience has deepened students’ understanding of Indigenous perspectives and the important role traditional knowledge plays in shaping Australia’s food history and identity.
Year 12 Food Studies
As we step into Unit 4 of Year 12 Food Studies, students will begin exploring the topic of navigating food information examining how food is marketed, labelled, and understood in today’s health-conscious world. To kick off the unit, students prepared a delicious Paleo Butter Chicken served with Cauliflower Rice. This practical activity helped students consider how food choices align with specific dietary patterns and lifestyle trends, such as the Paleo diet, which focuses on whole, unprocessed ingredients. This practical not only reinforced key theoretical concepts but also encouraged critical thinking around food fads, nutrition claims, and consumer decision making.
