In The Classrooms - Goal Setting and Explicit Teaching

As we move through Term 2, it has been great to see the progress that students are making in their learning. Two of the teaching strategies that have a meaningful impact in our classrooms are; student goal setting and explicit teaching. These strategies are helping our students take ownership of their learning and build the confidence to succeed - both in school and beyond.

Students thrive when they understand what they're working toward. Through individual goal-setting sessions, students are encouraged to:

  • Reflect on their strengths and areas for growth
  • Set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals
  • Track their progress regularly
  • Celebrate their achievements

Explicit teaching is a structured approach where teachers clearly explain what, why, and how students are learning. Lessons begin with clear learning intentions and success criteria, followed by guided practice and timely feedback.

Key features in our classrooms include:

  • Clear learning intentions and "I can" statements
  • Modelled examples and guided instruction
  • Opportunities for practice with immediate feedback
  • Checkpoints to assess understanding and re-teach as needed

On Tuesday, Christian presented at the Statewide Principal Conference to principals and delegates from across Victoria on the CHPS Instructional Model. This research informed model, form the basis for all teaching and learning engagements at CHPS.

Our Boat has a Name - CHPS Ahoy

At the Whole School Assembly last week, representatives from the Junior School Council announced the name of the boat near the Prep and Junior play areas. The name was determined by gathering suggestions of appropriate names from each class in the school, with JSC representatives, then taking it back to their meeting. The JSC then created a short list, and finally, each class cast a vote on what they believed the boat should be called.  "CHPS Ahoy" was the winner!
