Grade 2/3

Literacy.
In Literacy, students have been working on building their fluency through engaging reading passages that not only support their reading development but also expand their general knowledge. These texts have been carefully chosen to connect with our current Science topic of life cycles and our Civics and Citizenship focus on community and what it means to be a good citizen. This integrated approach has helped students make meaningful connections across learning areas while strengthening their reading skills.
Alongside fluency, students have begun to explore how to extract information from texts by answering questions that require both literal understanding and deeper, inferred thinking. They are learning to recognise that texts are created for different purposes—whether to entertain, inform, or persuade—and are developing the ability to adjust their reading strategies accordingly. As a result, students are transitioning from 'learning to read' to 'reading to learn', a vital shift that supports their growth as independent, thoughtful learners.
We would like to congratulate all the students who received Reading Night Awards this week! These awards celebrate the time and effort students have dedicated to reading at home, building their fluency, confidence, and love of books. It has been wonderful to see so many students reaching milestones and taking pride in their progress. Keep up the fantastic work—every minute spent reading helps grow a lifelong skill!
Numeracy
Over the past three weeks in Numeracy, students have been strengthening their addition fluency through a variety of engaging games and problem-solving activities. A favourite in many classrooms has been “Addo,” a fast-paced game that encourages students to quickly recall and apply their addition facts in a fun and interactive way. This game-based approach not only builds confidence but also fosters friendly competition and collaboration among peers.
In addition to games, students have been challenged with problem-solving puzzles such as “Arithmagons.” These mathematical puzzles require students to think critically and apply their number knowledge to find missing values, promoting deeper understanding of number relationships and mental computation strategies. Through these activities, students are not only becoming faster and more accurate with their addition facts but are also developing flexible thinking and perseverance when working with numbers.
Brain Breaks!
Over the past few weeks, students have been working hard and showing great resilience during a busy period of assessments. To support their wellbeing and give them time to recharge, we’ve been incorporating some relaxed afternoon activities into our days. Whether it’s quiet reading, creative tasks, or time outside enjoying the fresh air, students have thoroughly enjoyed these moments to unwind and reset. It’s been a valuable way to balance their learning and help them finish the term on a positive note.
