Indigenous Text: No Way Yirrikipayi!
Over the past couple of weeks we have focused on indigenous texts. We learnt about where the Tiwi Islands are and focused on a picture story book called 'No Way Yirrikipayi!' The story was written by some Tiwi Islander children along with the popular Australian author Alison Lester. The story features a 'yirrikipayi' (Tiwi for crocodile) who is out hunting for something to eat. He comes across a variety of animals. We loved saying 'No way Yirrikipayi! You're not eating me today!" We talked about all the Tiwi langugage for the animals in the text and wrote and drew about them. We also read the story 'Awesome Emu' which is about an emu who is a 'show off'. The moral of the story reminds us to be humble about our successes.

The Truck Cat
We also continued to complete some work around 'The Truck Cat' book. We wrote our own Tinka the cat adventure stories.
Sounds Write
Prep students have been learning the sounds for the letters 'j, w, z, y, x and q'. Now we have learnt all the intial letter sounds of the whole alphabet! They have been building words from these letters and are learning how to correctly form the letters to write them. We have also been trying to write on lines and dotted thirds.
Mathematics
In Maths we have been learning about measuring length. We used unifix blocks to measure a variety of items around our classroom. We measured the length of our shoes and hands. Some students even measured each other! It was lots of fun!
