This Week At OOPS

NAIDOC Celebrations

As NAIDOC Week this year falls on the 7th-14th July (during our school holidays), we celebrated it early on Wednesday as part of our whole school Wellbeing Day.

The morning started off with classes running their regular daily Yarning Circles, followed by the added excitement of being able to do a gallery walk of all the classes' yarning mat designs. Students then returned to their classrooms to share in some Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander literature, followed by a nature-inspired craft activity with their buddy classes. There was everything from etchings to nature collages to art created within nature itself. The most exciting of which was our whole school art project where students helped build a giant image of Bunjil the Creator using sticks they had collected throughout the week (final results coming soon!). The outdoor fun then continued with classes participating in some traditional games including Kai, Marngrook, Turlulu, Boogalah and many more.

What a fantastic celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture!

Local Woodturning Excursion

Yesterday Jen McCann walked with some of our Year 5 and 6 students to Koonung Cottage where the Koonung Wood Turning Guild put on a special demonstration for us.  The students enjoyed watching this skilled craft up close.

Thank you to the wonderful volunteers at Koonung Wood Turning Guild for hosting us.
