NAIDOC Week 2024
This year’s National NAIDOC Week theme is “Keep the Fire Burning! Black, Loud & Proud.” The theme honors the enduring strength and vitality of First Nations culture, with fire as a symbol of connection to Country, to each other, and to the rich tapestry of traditions that define Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
As part of the tradition at Trinity College, the senior school Aboriginal students played against the staff on Tuesday lunch, while the middle school Aboriginal students played AFL9s on Thursday lunch. Despite floggings in the past, the senior school boys put up a great effort and only narrowly lost—mainly due to the 0/13 from 3-point range by Mr. Callum Walley. Meanwhile, the middle school boys kicked 2 goals, a significant improvement from their zero goals in the last couple of years, but still lost.
Friday morning saw the culmination of many hours of hard work with the Boorloo Boys, our College’s Aboriginal dance group, along with our didge players, performing at the NAIDOC assembly. This year's dance tells the story of the ancient timeline. The narrative begins with the spirits of the land, who were here first. When the rains came, they brought vegetation and trees. As the vegetation grew, animals soon followed, including the kangaroo and emu. Finally, humans arrived, and we celebrate this journey through the Nyumbi. A special thanks to our didge and dance teacher Mr Olman Walley, who not only choreographed the dance and composed the music but also gave a fantastic Welcome to Country to start the assembly.
After the assembly, friends and family of the boys joined us for a lovely morning tea in the staff room. All in all, it has been a great week. Special thanks to Mr. Callum Walley, Mr. Keeshawn Cook, and Mr. Ethan Hansen for all their extra work in assisting the boys this year.
