Around Our Level
Our Preps have settled in well and we are looking forward to so many exciting activities planned for Term 3, which include celebrating 100 Days of School, Olympics Day and Book Week Character Dress Up. We also have our Big Day Disco organised by our Parents Association, Cheer Toastie Truck, Trivia Night and Mateship Program.
Our Mateship Program is part of our Student Wellbeing Program at Yarra Road Primary School. Students are placed into multi-age groups that meet twice a term. This allows students to foster close relationships with other teachers and undertake team building activities, learn about character strengths, Respectful Relationships Program and UR Strong Friendology Program.
In Maths, we have been revising the numbers to 10 and this week we looked at numbers to 20, which includes writing, making and modelling the numbers.
In Literacy, we have commenced Guided Reading sessions focussing on sight words, reading fluency and comprehension. We have also commenced a unit in writing on Poetry. Our Prep students created ‘list poems’ about their Mum and poems about ‘I’m Tired’. In UFLI Reading lessons we have been learning about the sounds that ‘w’ and ‘j’ make this week.
In Geography, we have been learning about Australia as part of our bigger whole school focus on the Olympic Games in Paris.
In History, we have been learning about the different features of the Australian Flag (Union Jack, Southern Cross and Commonwealth Star). We have been learning about the Aboriginal Flag and what the colours represent. (orange - the earth, black - the Indigenous people, yellow - the sun).
In Wellbeing, we have used the UR Strong Friendology Program to learn about the ‘Friend-o-meter’ and using the zones to help us select positive friendships both in the classroom and in the school yard.
