Exploring Globalisation in Humanities

Over the past two weeks, our students have been diligently expanding their geographical knowledge with a focus on the concept of interconnection. In our Humanities classes, we've delved into the different types of globalisation that impact our world—economic, cultural, technological, military, and environmental. This exploration has given our students a comprehensive understanding of how interconnected our global community is and the various forces that drive this interconnection.

To bring this knowledge to life, students have embarked on a project where they create their own research questions to explore the impacts of globalisation in-depth. Each student has chosen a specific aspect of globalisation to investigate, allowing them to tailor their research to their interests and curiosities. This process has not only honed their research skills but also fostered a deeper, more personal connection to the subject matter.

Currently, our young researchers are taking their projects a step further by developing policies that address the impacts of globalisation they have studied. Acting as different cabinet ministers in a hypothetical government, they are formulating strategies and guidelines to guide their chosen country through the complexities of globalisation. This exercise encourages them to think critically and creatively, considering both the benefits and challenges of global interconnection.

We are excited to see the innovative solutions our students will propose and the thoughtful discussions this project will inspire. Their engagement and enthusiasm in this unit has been truly commendable, and we look forward to sharing more of their insights and progress in the coming weeks.

Music

As the school year progresses, our secondary music department is abuzz with excitement and activity. At the start of the year, we were thrilled to introduce a range of new instruments to our program, including guitars, keyboards, a drum kit, and ukuleles. These additions have opened up new musical opportunities for our students in Years 7-9, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive.

The introduction of these instruments has been complemented by the arrival of two talented instrumental staff members. Mr. Smith has joined us, bringing his expertise in guitar, drums, bass, and ukulele. His dynamic teaching style and vast experience have already made a significant impact on our students, many of whom are quickly mastering their chosen instruments.

Joining Mr. Smith is Mr. Silva, who specialises in voice and piano. His passion for music and dedication to nurturing young talent is clear in our department. Mr. Silva's lessons are always engaging and inspiring, and it's been wonderful to see students thrive under his guidance.

The enthusiasm for these new lessons is evident, with spaces filling up rapidly and most already nearing capacity. It's clear that our students are eager to take advantage of these new learning opportunities, and we are delighted to see such high levels of participation and enthusiasm.

One of the most exciting outcomes of these new additions is the emergence of a new school band. This group of talented students has come together to explore their musical creativity, blending the skills they've acquired in their lessons. Their rehearsals are filled with energy and collaboration, and they are quickly developing a unique sound that we can't wait to share with the school community.

Overall, the start of this school year has been a fantastic time for our secondary music department. With the new instruments, the expertise of Mr. Smith and Mr. Silva, and the enthusiasm of our students, we are looking forward to a year filled with musical growth, creativity, and performance. Stay tuned for updates on our new band and other exciting musical projects throughout the year!

There are a few spots left if your student is keen to further pursue musical endeavours.

I would like to thank the school community for your ongoing support.

Mathematics

In Year Nine Mathematics over the past four weeks students have been consolidating their understanding of foundational Probability concepts. They have revisited concepts such as sample spaces, outcomes, and the calculation of probabilities. Through practice and reinforcement, they have been solidifying their grasp of these fundamental principles, setting a strong foundation for further exploration.

They have enthusiastically delved into practical applications, including the use of Venn Diagrams, Two-way tables, and Set Notation to organise and analyse data sets effectively.

Additionally, students have explored visual tools such as Arrays and Tree Diagrams to represent and analyse Two-step Experiments, enhancing their ability to tackle complex probability scenarios with confidence. Through hands-on experimentation, they have also gained insights into Experimental Probability, comparing their results with Theoretical Probabilities to deepen their understanding of probability concepts.

This week students were able to measure their improvement and understanding of the Probability Unit by completing a post- test using Essential Assessment. This tool also identifies the next steps in students understanding and has been instrumental in providing personalised feedback and guiding our students’ learning journey.

As our Year 9 Students continue their Mathematical journey, they are not only mastering Probability but also developing critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills essential for success in Mathematics and beyond.
