Child Safe Standards

This newsletter we revisit the child safe standards 10 & 11 and highlight what actions we are taking at OLSC to ensure the standards are being followed.

Standard 10: Review of child safety practices

Schools must ensure that implementation of the Child Safe Standards is regularly reviewed and improved.

Actions to Meet this standard at OLSC include:

  • Staff, parent and student Code of Conducts are signed yearly
  • Child Safety & Wellbeing Policy is updated regularly
  • Child Safety & Wellbeing Policy is unpacked with staff yearly
  • Child Safety & Wellbeing Procedures are in place & reviewed
  • Systems and processes implemented & reviewed to record and analyse all complaints, concerns and safety incidents
  • Monitor and manage child safety risks using a risk register

Standard 11: Implementation of practices

Schools must have policies and procedures that document how schools are safe for children, young people and students.

Actions to Meet this standard at OLSC include:

  • Publish child safety policies on the school website
  • Integrate child safety into induction processes, ongoing education, training and supervision for all staff and volunteers
  • Provide copies of child safety policies in welcome packs and transition resources
  • Display easy-to-read posters in various locations around the school
  • Include a regular child safety item in newsletters

Friendship Benches

Great news our Friendship Benches have arrived. Our Friendship Benches have been  placed outside in the play areas so students who are feeling lonely and need a friend or someone to talk to can sit on. This allows other children on the playground to clearly see when someone needs support or a friend. They can join the student on the bench for a chat or invite them to play.

Friendship Benches benefit all students, not just the ones who are feeling lonely. It helps students learn empathy by showing them how to recognize when someone else is in need and how we can be kind to them. This also teaches them to be an upstander —to recognise the feelings of others and to step forward to do something about it.

Aussie of the Month

The Aussie of the Month award recognises students

for their contribution to our school community.

Aussie of the Month Award winners are students who:

  • Are role models for others
  • Show consideration and respect for others
  • Are inclusive and live our school motto: where every child is valued

Congratulations to this month's winners:
