Learning Centre News...

Learning Centre One

Dearest gentle readers, it is with great pleasure that we arrive at the end of term 2! What a fun filled term of learning the students have had in prep. They have all shown a great deal of growth and have tackled all the tasks that have been put in front of them. It has been a great Semester of learning and we hope you all have a well deserved break.

The students had a fantastic time during their Science Incursion, where we had Dr. Loz and her team come to OLSC and facilitate a range of different science experiments for the kids to participate in. We definitely thought they were very cute little scientists in their lab coats.

Throughout Literacy,  the students have been reading a range of texts being ‘ Wombat, Do Not Open This Book and The Worst Dog in the World’. The students learned about making predictions, identifying texts that are fiction and why, how to make inferences while reading and how pictures give us a deeper meaning of the text. The students then used the text as a tool to help us write sentences relating to the text we are exploring. The students worked to read and write common words and use them in their writing.

During Math, the students have been learning about length and the language associated with length. The students explored with is longer and shorter by measuring themselves with streamers, cubed ad popsticks. The students then looked at items that are longer and shorter than a ruler. The students then created a variety of snake lengths and ordered them from longest to shortest.

In Religion, the students have continued to explore baptism being a sacrament of initiation. The students looked at the different symbols of baptism being the water, oil, candle and white dove. They learned about how being baptised is when you are welcomed into a group. The students made connections of being welcomed into the church as being welcomed into a sports group, dance team etc.

In Term 3, we welcome Natasha who will be taking over Sam’s learning group while she begins her family leave in week 2 of Term 3. I hope you can all join us in thanking Sam for her contributions to OLSC and we wish her all the best as she embarks on her new journey, make sure you catch her and send your well wishes. We will miss Sam dearly in the prep team!

Learning Centre Two

5/6 CAMP EDITION

On Monday 24th June, the 5/6 students and teachers travelled by bus to Sovereign Hill in Ballarat for their senior camp. The three days in the township were full of exploration, learning and sugary treats. It was a chilly experience but one that will certainly be fondly remembered by all.

We spent our days panning for gold, watching confectionary being made, dipping candles, buying souvenirs and learning about the gold rush and how it has impacted the Indigenous Australians and shaped our country as we know it today.

Next term, the students will reflect on their camp and write about their many experiences and memories. Families will have the opportunity to read these reflections and see some of the photos taken of their children.

Here are some for you all to see. I am sure you'll agree, it looks like everyone had a most wonderful time!

THANK YOU!

We would like to take this opportunity to farewell Bianca from LC2 at the end of this term. Bianca will be joining the LC3 teaching team for the remainder of the year. A big thanks to her for being a valuable part of the 5/6 team this semester.

During Maths, we have been using lots of resources to help develop our understanding of addition and subtraction.

In Religion, we learnt that reconciliation is the sacrament of forgiveness.

Learning Centre Four

Congratulations to all our students who attended their learning conversations with their families and showcased the amazing work they have accomplished this semester.

Maths

In Maths, students were learning how to correctly order and compare numbers when placing them on a number line. They identified missing numbers on number lines and ordered numbers from lowest to highest using place value. The Year 3 students learnt how to identify the features of three-dimensional objects, including edges, faces and vertices. The Year 4 students learnt that objects can have reflective or line symmetry. Students experimented how to use rotational symmetry with various objects.

Literacy

Over the last 2 weeks, students continued to explore extreme weather conditions including heatwaves, droughts, volcanoes, floods, bushfires and cyclones. They used specific information found in texts to answer literal and inferring questions. Students used graphic organisers to record what they might see, feel or hear it they witnessed a particular weather event and used these to write a snapshot piece of writing. This included more descriptive and figurative language to help develop a highly visible picture in their readers’ heads.

Inquiry

Over the fortnight, students have continued to explore different types of science. Using their completed Inquiry proposals which included sciences, such as physical, earth, force and temperature, students have independently chosen their own question to investigate. They are completed their own projects and presented them in a showcase throughout the learning space.

Religion

In Religion, students worked in groups to create puppets to represent what happened at the Last Supper story and what the Priest does at Mass. Students reflected on what they knew about the sacred symbols and rituals associated with the Eucharist. Congratulations to our Year 4 students who received Jesus in the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first-time.
