Number Talks

With Ms Ballouk

Number talks are a way for students to practice mental maths and strengthen their number sense. During Number talks, students talk about numbers, share strategies, and solve problems together. They help students become more flexible and confident in their maths skills. By discussing different ways to solve problems, students learn new strategies and gain a deeper understanding of numbers. It's a fun and engaging way to boost maths fluency and problem-solving skills!

Number talks promote a positive maths mindset and students develop a sense of community in the classroom and feel more comfortable sharing their mathematical thinking. At GEPS, Number talks are done at least 3 times a week and it encourages collaboration and fosters a supportive learning environment where students can learn from each other's approaches to problem-solving. Some examples of Number talks that can be done at home are:

Dot Talks – students are shown an image with several dots and they need to explain how they managed to find the total.

Number Talks – children are shown a problem, like 5 + 19 or  27 x 120 and they need to explain how they found the solution.
