Snowy Leadership School

By Gaby Daly

Four others and I, Matilda, Alex, Jesse and Nate were the 5 lucky people to get into the School for Student Leadership at Snowy River Campus Term 2, 2024.  Throughout my time here at the Snowy River School for Student Leaders, I have learnt many things.

9 Learning Concepts

  1. Learning Strategies
  2. Emotional Management
  3. Resilience
  4. Identity
  5. Empathy
  6. Respectful Relationships
  7. Collaboration
  8. Health & Wellbeing
  9. Environment

Mostly every day apart from the recharge days on Saturday, we would do different activities such as MTB, Surfing, Caving, Supping, Abseiling, Bridge Building, Raft Building, Canoeing, Expeditions, Photography and a lot of beach games.

Not only were these activities fun and engaging but they pushed me out of my comfort zone, which was hard but made it a lot easier when I got help. It has also helped me gain more exercise, which has made me a happier person.

All of these things have made me step out of my comfort zone which is challenging but has now helped me to give stuff ago even if I’m not sure.

Before learning how to become a better version of myself with the 9 Learning Concepts. I never really had high traits of them. I lacked a lot of collaboration. I never really worked in teams and when I did, I would always exclude myself. Same with emotional management, I never really could control my emotions and let people get under my skin but after gaining my confidence I don’t let people get to me. My public speaking has grown so much for me to be a strong and better leader. This was caused by doing numerous presentations and speeches, it was hard at first but after getting support from my teachers and peers made it so much easier. At the end of the term, we get our results and see what Learning Concept we have grown in the most. I have grown the most in Environment, this is because I liked to work a lot in the kitchen, by making and preparing food. I am happy with my results because you can see all the improvement I have made while being at this School.

I encourage any of the year 9 in the following years to take this opportunity because not only will it help you into becoming a leader, but you will take home a lot of friends and memories from this experience, these friends will stay with you forever and you’ll never forget them.
