IT'S ALL ABOUT JAPANESE!

KINDERGARTEN

The kindergarten children have been exposed to the Japanese language through play, songs, games, role-play, and stories. They have shown great enthusiasm, curiosity, and inquisitiveness. The children have been very engaged in learning as we celebrated Children’s Day, made underwear for Polar Bear, created colourful outer space drawings, and more.

PREP

Prep students have been sharing more about themselves in Japanese with their classmates, including their age, favourite lollipop colour, and most recently, how they are feeling. They have also been learning a popular Japanese children's song, 「ぱんだ、うさぎ、こあら」. The children have eagerly participated in activities reinforcing three characters of the Japanese alphabet.

GRADE 1/2

Students have been learning the Japanese kanji numbers 1 to 10 while talking about the number of people in their family in Japanese. They enjoyed various activities to reinforce their learning, including racing to put their team in numerical order. As part of the unit on families in cartoons, Grade 1/2 students made bowing puppets, which they used to introduce and talk about their families.

GRADE 3/4

The Grade 3/4 students are wrapping up the Traditional Japanese Toys and Games unit. They cheered for and encouraged each other in Japanese as they tested their skills on various games, all requiring the use of Japanese language. To celebrate the end of the topic, students enjoyed a games day.

Toy 1: DarumaotoshiTo win the game, players must get the "Daruma" from the top to the bottom of the stack without knocking him off by hitting out the lower pieces one by one with a hammer. This game reinforced colours in Japanese.

Toy 2: KendamaPlayers toss the ball and attempt to catch it in one of the cups or spear it with the point of the stick. We reinforced numbers as students tried increasingly difficult tricks with this toy.

Toy 3: OhajikiThis traditional Japanese children's game is similar to marbles and is played with small, coin-shaped pieces called ohajiki.

Toy 4: OtedamaIn this game, small bean bags are tossed and juggled.

GRADE 5/6

Students have been learning to present a 'jikoshoukai' (self-introduction) in Japanese. Half of each lesson was spent consolidating the language as a class through games. During the other half, students were responsible for managing their own learning. They were challenged to use their class time effectively to progress through the levels of difficulty. Students chose to work individually, in pairs, or in groups. Those advancing quickly, often showed compassion and offered support to classmates. Many students were encouraging and supportive of their classmates, especially when they were attempting the highest level, Black Belt, which required them to present their entire self-introduction in front of the class as an audience.  Encourage your child to present their self-introduction to you and reflect on their efforts in class to achieve their level of proficiency.
