What's happening in classrooms this term?

Literacy

Each class will continue their work to improve their understanding of spelling, grammar and vocab. On top of this:

• Ellen’s class are reading and talking about a book called “What do you call your Grandma?” Later in the term they will be discovering the world of poetry and tongue twisters.
• Kim’s class will be studying a variety of stories and information texts about animals. They will use the books to help them become better writers and to entertain and inform a variety of audiences.
• Kathryn and Anna’s classes are reading the novel ‘The Little Wave’. They will be analysing the story using small group discussions where they each play a different role. Students will be writing stories to entertain our readers, which we will enter into the Mount Beauty Writers Festival. The language and descriptions in ‘The Little Wave’ will help us improve our writing and develop our characters.
• Steph’s class are finishing off the novel that we started last term: “Skellig”. Later on, we will read and analyse the story “How to Bee”. We will learn to write a news report by studying characters and themes and by building our skills in drafting, revising and editing our writing.

Maths

The younger years will be learning about multiplicative thinking following on from our additive thinking units last term. This will include developing their skills and strategies around multiplication, division, arrays and problem solving. They will also look at the properties of shapes and investigate patterns. 

The older grades maths units will focus on fractions, decimals and percentages and how they relate to our world. Later in the term we will delve into statistics, probability, shapes and space. 

Inquiry

Our Inquiry focus for term 3 is Discovery. During inquiry session we will learn about the properties of materials and their different uses, make discoveries as we practise thinking and acting like scientists, test predictions, develop hypotheses to make discoveries and develop our science inquiry skills by investigating answers to scientific questions.

Wellbeing

In our Friday Wellbeing lessons, teachers will continue to use and adapt the Grow Your Mind and Respectful Relationships resources to teach the social and personal skills that we needed to help us develop our mental health and build healthy relationships.

Rotations and Electives

Our Monday afternoon Prep-3 rotations this term will include drama games with Ellen, science experiments with Kim and Cooking with Kathryn. 

The Upper Year elective areas for this term will include: Circus, Drama, Animation, Arts and Crafts and Kitchen/Garden.

NAIDOC Week

3/4 Classroom News 

This week students in 3/4K have enjoyed reconnecting after the school break and meeting our new classmate Charlie C.  

On Monday students created wonderful watercolor posters in celebration of NAIDOC Week '50 Years of Deadly'(5-12th July). 

We learnt all about the history of NAIDOC week, looked at maps of Indigenous Australian language/social/nation groups (AIATSIS), listened to a video of how First Nations peoples express their connection to country, and also delved into some history about Indigenous perspectives from when the First Fleet arrived. 

Student work is displayed on our class 'WOW Wall' on the windows (road side of the school)... so drop past to have a look if you are interested. The students are very proud to be able to share some of their work with you.

Kitchen Garden Elective

We are please to let our students now, we have recieved some new gardening supplies to help us maintain our garden beds throughout winter.  This week our student gardening squad cleaned out the veggie boxes, have started pruning the fruit trees, mixing though 12 bags of compost and airratting the soil and layed a thick layer of straw over or around the veggie patches, all while using new gardening gloves and peastraw sourced from Bunnings.  

A huge thank you to Bunnings Wodonga for the generous donation of the gardening gloves and to our local Mount Beauty Op Shop for a generous grant which helped us purchase the straw, compost, and in the near future some additional garden tools and supplies as well as equipment for the kitchen.  Moneys raised last term from lunchtime canteen will also continue to allow us to purchase ingredients this term to continue on with more lunchtime canteen days.
