Principal's Report

By Carolyn Serpell & Dave Fraser

Welcome to term 3!

A warm welcome back to all our families, and a special welcome to those families who are joining us for the first time.  We hope that you and your child(ren) enjoyed the break and are looking forward to all that term 3 has to offer.

This week, we have enjoyed a settled start to the term, with students enjoying reconnecting with their teachers and peers in the classroom and playground.  This week's sunshine has been particularly welcome, though we all have our fingers crossed for more snow!

Next week, we will resume our afternoon electives and rotations.  Our Year 3-6 ski program is also set to commence on Wednesday, subject to snow and weather conditions, so please keep an eye out for further Compass updates.  If your child is not participating in the skiing program, they are still expected to attend school, and will be participating in an alternate program.

2026 NAPLAN Celebration

The latest NAPLAN results were released this week and student reports have now been sent home with students.  As a school, we are very proud of our students' achievements.

This year, our school outperformed similar and network schools in all areas in both Year 3 and Year 5, for the percentage of students who achieved strong or exceeding in proficiency.

Our staff pay special attention to our relative learning growth data. This measures the change in results over two years from when students sat the tests in Year 3 to when they participated in Year 5. Our learning growth results this year were exceptional.

The percentages shown in the following table represent the proportion of students who have achieved high or medium growth relative to students that had a similar NAPLAN score two years prior. Again, all of our results were higher than similar schools and schools from our network.

We see these results as being evidence of our calm classrooms and the structures that our school has put in place to ensure that every child has the environment and support to feel safe, happy and ready to learn. It is a reflection of the dedication and expertise of our teachers and education support staff and the nurturing that families provide their children at home. Well done everyone!

Library Lunchtime Opening

This term Megan will be opening the library on Thursdays, for students to access, browse and enjoy a warm place to curl up with a good book.  Perfect for a chilly winter's day!

Tree Planting and Garden News

Our sincere thanks to the Mount Beauty Op Shop for their recent donation to our kitchen garden program.  Earlier this week, students in Years 3-6 all pitched in to dig over our school vegie garden with compost and to mulch it, ready for spring planting.  It was great to see so many hands on the shovels and spades, which were bought using some of these funds.

We were also grateful to receive a donation of gloves, this week, from Bunnings.  These will be put to good use this Monday, the 20th July, when students in the 3/4 class will be assisting Landcare with planting trees at Pebble Beach, as part of National Tree Day. Students are encouraged to wear sturdy boots, or to bring a spare pair of shoes and socks for this event.

Planned Industrial Action

Following failed negotiations, industrial action involving a 24 hour work stoppage, is now scheduled for Thursday 23rd July.  Once details are confirmed, further information will be provided next week.

Winter Raffle

Many thanks to everyone who supported our Winter Raffle.  A total of $7007.48 was raised towards the cost of our computers and we are deeply grateful to our sponsors and everyone who bought or sold a ticket. Massive thanks to Alison Kennett and Lauren McKechnie for their efforts in making this fundraising happen.

2027 Prep Enrolment and

Transition Activities

Today we held the first session of  'Ready, Set, Prep!', a series of pre-prep experiences to assist children to prepare for the transition to school. Today's focus included Storytime and Play with Ellen, and next Monday, students will have the opportunity to Sing and Play with Emily. It's been lovely to have the opportunity to show new families around the school and we encourage you to please let families of kinder children know about the opportunities available.  If you or families you know would like to have a tour of the school, please get in touch by calling the school office on (03) 57544354 or emailing mount.beauty.ps@education.vic.gov.au

Enrolments for Prep 2027 are due on the 31st July.  Enrolment forms can be collected from the school office or downloaded by clicking on the poster above.

Children's Book Week

A reminder to all families that we will be celebrating Children's Book Week in Term 3. Our Book Day celebrations and parade are planned for Thursday 6th August, and students and families are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book characters!
