"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." — Romans 12:2
This week has been a special one in our school community as our secondary students prepare to bring Frozen Jr. to life on stage (commencing tonight and each night through to Saturday evening). As I have watched rehearsals unfold, I have been reminded that behind every performance are countless unseen hours of practice, encouragement, perseverance and teamwork. A musical is not shaped in a single evening. It is formed over weeks and months through small, faithful moments that gradually become something beautiful. It caused me to pause and wonder if our hearts are not formed in much the same way. Not just our children's hearts. Ours too.

Every day, something is shaping us. Through the conversations we have, the books we read, the people we spend time with, the habits we cultivate, the stories we believe, the time we spend in God's Word and even the thoughts we replay in our minds. Little by little, these influences begin to shape our character, our perspective and the way we respond to the world around us.
As parents and educators, we naturally spend time thinking about what our children are learning. We celebrate new skills, growing confidence and academic achievement. Yet perhaps an even more important question is, Who are they becoming? And if we are honest, the same question gently comes back to each of us. Who am I becoming?
The Apostle Paul writes in Romans 12:2, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Every day there is a quiet invitation before us. We can allow the voices and values around us to shape us, or we can intentionally allow Christ to transform us from the inside out.

This is about far more than phones or social media, although they certainly play a part. It is about recognising that our hearts are continually being formed by whatever captures our attention and affection. The voices we listen to, the values we celebrate, the conversations we have around our dinner tables and the priorities we model all leave an imprint on those watching us.
The encouraging news is that formation has always been God's work. Throughout Scripture, we see Him patiently shaping ordinary people into people of extraordinary character. Peter learned courage. Martha discovered trust. Zacchaeus found generosity. The disciples were not transformed overnight, but through walking daily with Jesus.
As a Christian school, our desire extends far beyond helping students prepare for exams or future careers. We long to help shape young people whose hearts are captivated by Jesus. Young people who know that kindness is stronger than comparison, humility is greater than pride, forgiveness is more powerful than bitterness and serving others brings greater joy than serving ourselves.

This beautiful work cannot happen through school alone. It grows through the partnership we share with families. Every bedtime prayer, every conversation in the car, every meal shared around the table, every act of worship together and every moment of grace shown in the home becomes part of the story that is forming a child's heart.
One of the beautiful themes woven throughout Frozen Jr. is that fear can quietly shape the way we live, while love has the power to set people free. As Christians, we know that this points us towards an even greater truth. The perfect love of Christ does not simply help us face fear, it transforms our hearts. His grace reshapes our identity, our relationships and the way we love others.

As we continue walking together as the Devonport Christian School community, may we intentionally create space for God's voice to be the loudest voice in our lives. May His Word shape our thinking, His Spirit guide our decisions and His love overflow into every relationship. Because when our hearts are being formed by Christ, they naturally become hearts that help form others for Him.
Let our love speak life to others.
