Principal's Report

Dear HPS Community,
NAPLAN 2026
We are pleased to share our 2026 NAPLAN results, which highlight the achievements of our students across Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation, and Numeracy.
We are particularly proud of the relative growth from Year 3 to Year 5, with an increased percentage of students demonstrating medium or high growth across their two years of learning at HPS. This is a wonderful reflection of the dedication of our students and the commitment of our teachers to ensuring every child is supported to make strong learning progress.
We are incredibly proud of the teaching and learning at Heidelberg Primary School.
Well done to our students and staff!
NAPLAN data provides valuable information that helps us understand student achievement and learning growth. At Heidelberg Primary School, we use this information to:
- Inform families about progress: NAPLAN provides parents and carers with information about their child’s achievement in relation to national proficiency standards: Exceeding, Strong, Developing and Needs Additional Support.
- Support teaching and learning: Teachers use NAPLAN data alongside classroom assessment and other evidence to track student progress, identify areas where students may benefit from additional support, and provide opportunities for extension.
- Guide school improvement: NAPLAN data contributes to our planning for classroom programs and longer-term learning goals, helping us identify areas where adjustments or additional focus may be required. It also supports decisions about resourcing and targeted programs.
- Inform education priorities: At a broader level, NAPLAN data helps governments and education systems identify areas of need and make informed decisions about educational funding, resources and support across Australia.
Importantly, NAPLAN is one source of information among many that our teachers use to understand and support each child's learning. Our focus remains on knowing every student, understanding their individual learning needs and supporting them to make meaningful progress.
Small Acts, Big Impact - Bullying No Way Day
Our Student Representative Council (SRC) has been leading our school’s learning around Bullying No Way Week, Australia’s leading initiative for bullying prevention in schools. The week provides an opportunity to build a shared understanding of bullying behaviours and explore strategies to prevent and respond to bullying.
Bullying is everyone’s responsibility, and small acts can make a big difference.
This year’s theme reminds us that our actions don’t need to be big to change someone’s world. Small acts – including someone, speaking up, checking in, or showing kindness – can create meaningful and lasting change.
At Heidelberg Primary School, we are committed to building an environment where everyone feels they belong, diversity is celebrated and bullying is never accepted. During Bullying No Way Week, we encourage our students, families and wider community to think about the small things we can all do to make a positive difference.
HPS students are encouraged to get behind the SRC initiatives next week:
- Monday – Add a splash of purple: This is not an out-of-uniform day. Students can simply add a touch of purple to their school uniform with a hair accessory, socks, badge, scarf or another small item.
- Friday – Odd Socks Day: Wear odd socks to celebrate and show our support for everyone’s individuality and differences.
Small acts. Big impact. Together, we can make a difference.
School Uniform
As the colder weather continues, we understand that winter can make it challenging to keep school uniforms washed, dried and ready to wear each day. We appreciate the efforts families make to ensure students arrive at school in the correct uniform, particularly during these wintery months.
Wearing the Heidelberg Primary School uniform is about much more than clothing. It helps foster a strong sense of belonging, school pride and team spirit. When students wear their uniform with pride, they demonstrate that they are part of a community built on our shared values of respect, responsibility, resilience and compassion. A consistent uniform also promotes equity and helps create a positive learning environment where everyone feels included.
We ask families to continue supporting their children to wear the correct school uniform each day. If your family is experiencing difficulties accessing or replacing uniform items, please don't hesitate to contact the school office or keep an eye out for upcoming second hand uniform sales. We are always happy to work with families to ensure every student can proudly represent Heidelberg Primary School.
Thank you for your ongoing support in helping our students take pride in themselves, their school and our wonderful community.
SAC gate access
Following feedback regarding access to SAC through the gate beside the cottage building on Cape St last week, we will be making an additional access point available moving forward.
Families will be able to access the SAC program through both Gate 3 on Darebin St and the side gate from Cape St.
We hope this additional access will make drop-off and pick-up a little easier and more convenient for families using the SAC program.
Thank you for your feedback and for helping us continue to improve access and arrangements for our school community.
