Dear Parents and Carers,
It has been a busy and productive fortnight at Oak Flats Public School, with the Life Education Van arriving, our first assemblies for the year for our K-2 and 3-6 students, the Mid South District Swimming carnival and of course the amazing SRC initiative which raised money for breast cancer.
Attendance
Every day matters for your child’s learning. Parents play an important role in ensuring students get to school and stay in school every day.
How can parents help? Parents can help build positive attendance habits by:
- helping your child learn the importance of punctuality and routine.
- making sure your child arrives on time from the start of the school day, ready to take part.
- reducing disruption to learning where you can, by planning any necessary appointments outside of school time.
- contacting your school to explain any absences.
- making sure any holidays or medical appointments are taken outside school hours.
- working with the school to encourage and support regular attendance.
Keeping your children safe when dropping off and picking up at school
Keeping your children safe when dropping off and picking up at school Here are a few things you can do to help keep your children and others safer during drop-off and pick-up times during the school week:
- Make sure your children are fastened in the correct child car seat for their age and size and that it is fitted correctly.
- Stick to the 40km/h speed limit in a school zone and look out for children who may be about.
- Watch for flashing lights on buses. They let you know that there may be children crossing or about to cross the road. A 40km/h limit applies when school bus lights flash.
- Always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways.
- Always Park and turn legally around schools. Manoeuvres such as U-turns and three-point turns are dangerous during busy school drop-off and pick-up times.
- Drop your children off and pick them up on the school side of the road in your school’s designated drop-off and pick-up area. Never call out to them from across the road – they may run to you without checking for traffic.
- It’s safest for children to get out of the car through the Safety Door, away from passing traffic. This is the rear footpath side door of the car.
OFPS Merit System
Below is an overview of our school merit system, awards and criteria for achieving gold.

- Active Learner - I focus on completing quality work efficiently.
Children who are observed demonstrating PBL values in class can receive White Cards. Teachers can choose to record white cards in different ways depending on the grade level which can include on a stamp chart, digitally or by giving out white cards to be collected in envelopes.

- Gold Level = 30 White Cards
Children can receive Oakie Doakies, fast and frequent awards for positive behaviour in the classroom and playground that go into a draw at the fortnightly Assembly. Oakie Doakies are stored in a giant thermometer in the school hall. Throughout the year there are whole school rewards when the Oakie Doakies fill different levels of the thermometer.
Four Merit Awards are handed out per class at each fortnight Assembly.
Have a wonderful fortnight.
