Grade 1 Community News
The Grade 1s have been doing a wonderful job this fortnight. We have been learning so many new things and creating memories with our classes. It was lovely welcoming families into our classrooms for Meet & Greet in Week 4. We hope you all enjoyed your time getting to know the teachers.
Reading
In Reading, we have been continuing our reading unit fables and stories. In this unit, students have been identifying different characteristics of fables. For example, they identify different characters in fables and the moral of the story. In addition to this, students have been working on building their reading stamina during independent reading time and meeting regularly with their classroom teacher to discuss their reading goals.
Writing
In Writing, students have gone through the writing process to create their own narrative. To begin with, we started looking at retelling events of familiar stories. Once the students were comfortable with this, we moved into planning, drafting, editing and revising their own narratives. The Grade 1s have some spectacular ideas in their stories and we can’t wait to watch their writing progress this year.
Maths
In Maths, we finished our counting unit where the kids practiced counting to and from 100. For the rest of this term, we will be completing a place value unit where students will look at recognising, ordering and partitioning numbers to 100. Classroom teachers will be working closely with each student to ensure they are working on purposeful learning tasks.
Vocabulary
Some new words we learnt during our Vocabulary lesson were:
Glum: describes feeling sad or down about something.
Quivering: describes shaking or trembling.
Ridiculous: describes when something is laughable.
A couple of friendly reminders for the school year ahead:
- Please encourage your child to read every night and record it in their reading journal as part of our take home reading program. We love to celebrate our reading milestones!
- Students are expected to wear their hats in the yard. Please make sure they come to school with a Tarneit Rise Primary School hat every day and that this hat is clearly labelled with your child’s name and grade
- Please ensure your child is only bringing water to school. Students are allowed to bring cut up fruit in containers to eat during learning time.
- Lunch orders are available for students on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the term and may be ordered through: https://classroomcuisine.com.au/
