Grade 5/6 News

Term 1, Week 6

Welcome to the Grade 5/6 News Page.

Welcome

We have now crossed the middle of our first term! Everyone has settled extraordinary well into the regular routines of school life in the senior building. We were enormously proud of all of our students who participated in the Start Up performance last Friday. Our Grade 5s did an amazing job supporting their Prep Buddies to get up in front of a huge audience to perform. The Grade 6 students were able to prove us wrong and show us that they could complete the difficult part of the routine by forming human bikes. One of the main reasons behind doing these start up performances is to show our students that they can achieve amazing results when they work together as a team.

Reminders and Upcoming Events:

Week 7:

Wednesday 13th March - Excursion: Navy Band Concert at Ulumbarra (Grade 6 only)

Friday - Homework Due - Reading Log and Big Write Talk Homework (Grade 6 only)

Week 8:

Friday - Homework Due - Reading Log and Maths

NAPLAN

Next week (Week 7) our Grade 3 and Grade 5 students will complete the NAPLAN Assessments. There are 4 assessments in total - Numeracy, Conventions of Language, Reading and Writing. We will complete these on Wednesday - Friday (13th – 15th March). Our students have spent some time during the past two weeks ensuring their Netbooks are compatible and they have completed practice tests.

It is important that our students are ready for the assessments next week, specifically they will need;-

  • A set of headphones - these were provided to students at the beginning of this year and are kept at school.
  • Netbooks and chargers will need to be left at school for the duration of Week 7. Please make sure chargers are named and sent to school with Netbooks on Tuesday 12th March.
  • It’s important for students to arrive at school on time, as we will commence at 8.45am.

Learning in Weeks 7 & 8

Our Grade 6s will continue with their regular learning program during the NAPLAN sessions in Week 7, which will focus on Reading, Writing and Mathematics. During the rest of the week, our regular timetable will continue.

In Reading, the students will be working on being able to identify the difference between a fact and an opinion in a text. They will also be looking at 'Cause and Effect' and will work on developing an understanding of how one event in a story can cause another event to occur.

In Writing, we will be going back to working on Narratives. We will be having a big focus on making our writing more descriptive and developing a better understanding of the different types of sentences, and in particular, how to can a complex sentence.

In Mathematics, our Fluid Groups' focus is now turning towards the processes of multiplication and division. For the remainder of this term, our applied focus is going to be on data, looking at how to gather, collate, present and interpret it.

Information for parents can be found by clicking on this link https://www.vic.gov.au/moving-primary-secondary-school-information-parents-and-carers. This could is a good starting point for the families that are going to go through the process for the first time, along with parents who have been through it before but some time ago.

Some schools, in particular non-government schools, have begun advertising their Information Evenings and Open Days. The school’s website is the best place to go to find out information about these experiences and when they are occurring.

Please remember to check Compass alerts and keep up to date with reading our school’s newsletter as information will be sent out over the year. It’s important to complete the different parts of the process within the set time frames.
