Letter to Family and Friends

Dear Pilgrim Families,

Last year, we had a focus on one of our core values - SERVE.

We explored with our students what serving is and how we can serve others, beyond the classroom.

In Foundation and Year 1, our iUnit had a focus on past and present family life. We enjoyed interviewing some grandparents and older adults and gained an understanding about life for them now and in the past. The students learnt about older people in their families, lives and community.

We spent time thinking about how we could serve older people, gathering ideas on how we could build connections and friendships with them. Staff were inspired by the show, ‘Old people’s home for 4 year olds’.

We approached Seeds Church with the idea of an intergenerational playgroup and in Term 3 and 4 of 2023, we enjoyed some playtimes with their Seniors.

This year, we are excited to announce the official launch of Grandbuddies - a playgroup for different generations. We have ten adults joining us this year for regular sessions, to make connections, build friendships and participate in activities and games. We love singing songs, doing art and craft activities plus some STEM fun too! We enjoy reading books together and talking about some of the things we like at school. We are beginning to develop confidence with our new friends and we have lots of giggles and laughter!

Intergenerational activities are social engagements and interactions, bringing together younger and older generations for a common purpose. They build on the strengths that different generations have to offer, nurture understanding and mutual respect, and challenge ageism. Both parties have the opportunity to give as well as receive, and to feel a sense of ownership and achievement. And it aims to put a smile on everyone’s face.

One of the strengths of this program is the connection to Wellbeing for our students and for our Grandbuddies. Research shows that connections between different generations are a key factor in increasing wellbeing, development of teamwork, and learning through play together. Children presented more prosocial behaviours, increased confidence, self-efficacy, empathy, caring, and the ability to be attuned to others  (Burgman & Mulvaney, 2016; Femia et al., 2008; Gamliel & Gabay, 2014).

We look forward to sharing many more stories, making stronger connections and encouraging our children to further explore serving.

Blessings,
