English - Overview

Reading

Our class novel for Term One is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, written by J.K. Rowling. The student's have been loving listening to the novel in class and picking up different details. Each week, the 5/6 class teachers read 2 chapters of the novel followed by watching the same parts of the movie adaption. Student's are then required to compare and contrast the book to the movie. It has been wonderful seeing the student's engaged in the Reading lessons and having wonderful class discussions about the book and movie.

Writing

Over the past 6 weeks our main focus has been on Exposition (Persuasive) and Imagination (Narrative) text types. These are the two options that the students will encounter in NAPLAN. We have revisited the text structure of both as well as spent focused lessons on how to build a confident and descriptive piece of writing. The structure of each can be seen in the posters above. We have also spent time in class working on how to edit a piece of writing and how to publish. We have seen some wonderful pieces of Writing this term.

Buddies & Chess

Our Friday Buddy  sessions have hit the ground running. All our Year Five students now have been assigned a buddy (or two) and weekly sessions have started. Each week our Year Five students assist in a lesson or having a play outside.

We have also begun our Year Six chess tournament. All students in Year Six were put into a draw were two names were picked out at a time. These two students then played their first chess match. The following weeks will see out tournament enter the finals and we can't wait to watch these matches.
