The Hay Fever MONSTER

Spring is here; the flowers are radiant, the wind is warm, the sun is out, the grass is growing, the bees are buzzing, the weather is unpredictable, the magpies are swooping, and the anticipation of the grand final is unbearably exciting.

And yet, it only takes the smallest of winds to swirl around the flowers and grasses whisking the pollens and seeds up into the air to transform a human being into a HAY FEVER MONSTER:  watery itchy beastly red eyes, relentless sneezing, an irritating cough, tiredness, and an unappeasable itchy nose.

The bad news is that the warmer and drier conditions are impacting the growth and flowering cycles of trees, plants and grasses resulting in an early HAY FEVER season. The good news is that it may not be so bad as previous years.

Regardless, if you have a child that suffers from Hay Fever and you would like to set them up to have a successful day of learning, socializing and alertness, then having a proactive hay fever plan will be beneficial for your child, your child’s teacher, and yourself. What can you do?

  1. Ask your friendly local pharmacist about what Hay Fever medication  best suits your child’s age and symptoms. This will take less than 5mins.
  2. Start treatment as soon as possible. Preferably in the morning before school
  3. Create a routine in the morning that includes the administration of the Hay Fever tablet to ensure their day runs smoothly.
  4. Provide the school with a Hay Fever Action Plan and medications so on days that medication is forgotten there is a clear plan to be followed. The Hay Fever action plan can be found at the office, in sick bay, or click here for the link https://www.allergy.org.au/images/pc/ASCIA_Treatment_Plan_Allergic_Rhinitis_2023.pdf
  5. Check the pollen forecast at  https://www.melbournepollen.com.au/ and treat your child accordingly
  6. Enjoy your day knowing that your child is going to have a Hay Fever free day and that you will not get a call from sick bay.
