3/4O - Term 3 Highlights

Class Mass

The theme of our Class Mass was KINDNESS. Some of us read at the lectern and three people in our class brought the bread, water and wine to the priest. For our reflection, we gave out kindness cards that our class made. We gave them to students, staff and parishioners at the church. We also saw pictures of our class doing kind things and our quotes and drawings on the two screens. At the end of the Mass, everyone sang Light The Way. After Mass, we went to the staff room for morning tea.

Year 4 School Camp

On our camp to Sovereign Hill, we did gold panning and watched a Light and Sound Show. We played a gold finding game called Gold Rush where we dug for gold. If we didn't have a gold licence, we were sent to ‘jail.’ Our teammates could buy one for us to get us out! Unfortunately we lost, but we still had a great time. A highlight of camp was when we found our first pieces of gold, and we got to take them home in special jars!

Swimming

We went to Aquastar Swim School at Haileybury Secondary College in Week 5 and Week 6. We had 2 assessment days (first day and second last day). On our final day, we did water safety. It went for 30 minutes. We did 3 rotations and we had lots of fun. We learnt many things at our swimming lessons, for example, freestyle, floating on our backs and soldier kicks. We liked swimming because we had lots of swimming practice and the instructors were very polite, happy and kind to us.

Book Week

Zehra was dressed up as Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. Co was a ninja from the book Diary Of A 6th Grader Ninja. Co’s favourite activity was the green screen project. Zehra’s favourite part was when we used oil pastels to create an artwork related to the shortlisted book, ‘Australia: From Dawn to Dusk’.

Narrative Writing

This term, we have been learning how to write a good narrative. Always make sure you plan your narrative using the story graph before you start writing. Add sizzling starts as sizzly as a sausage off a grill, similes, adjectives and adverbs, to keep the reader interested. Our narratives included a sizzling start, a section on the characters and setting, an introduction to the problem, a build up of tension (problem gets worse), an exciting ending and a character wrap up. We enjoyed publishing our work on Google Docs!

Maths - Time

We made our own class calendar for the month of September. We included special events like Father’s Day and the School Holidays. Here are some time conversions we know:

60 nanoseconds equals 1 millisecond and 1000 milliseconds is 1 second.  There are 60 seconds in 1 minute, 60 minutes in 1 hour, 24 hours in 1 day, 7 days in 1 week, 4 weeks in 1 month and 12 months in 1 year. On an analogue clock, the second hand rotates around the clock 360 degrees every 60 seconds. That means the minute hand then moves 1 interval/space.

Inquiry - Forces

The different types of forces are push, pull, magnetism, gravity, friction, levitation, air resistance and air tension. An example of forces you see in everyday life is when you pull a glass up to your mouth to drink and then push it down to put it on the table. On Friday the 25th of August, all the 3/4 classes gathered in the Performing Arts area to do an experiment. The experiment was about friction. The teachers put different materials on a baking tray to see how fast they moved. On Monday the 11th of September all the 3/4 classes are participating in an incursion about forces with the company ‘Mad About Science’. We think all the classes will be excited to learn about forces. We will hopefully learn about all the types of forces.

School Concert

"SJV Speaks for the Trees" is on the 5th and 6th of September.  It took a lot of effort and time to make an excellent concert! We started to practise last term in preparation for the big performance! SPOILER ALERT! Mrs Lacey decided that the 3/4 level song would be "How bad can I be." The 3/4s are dressing up in colourful costumes, for example wigs, hard hats and vests. 3/4s are The Onceler’s aunties, brothers and uncles. The Preps are wearing overalls and hats because they are farmers. 1/2s are animals such as Barbaloots, Swamee Swans and Humming Fish. All of the 5/6s are wearing skirts, wigs and other kinds of details. 5/6s are "Thneedville" people. The story of our concert "SJV Speaks For The Trees" is based on "The Lorax." We are all looking forward to the concert!
