Principal's Address

Mr Greg Miller

Dear Parents and Carers,

I trust this edition of Chev News finds all our families well.

I write to you regarding how we have developed, built and are now using Contemporary Learning Spaces for enhanced learning at Chevalier College.

I am excited to share insights about how our new Contemporary Learning Spaces (CLS) are the first step towards reshaping the learning environment for our students. Our newest CLS are carefully designed to optimise learning experiences and support our students' growth.

Unlike a traditional open space classroom, these new Contemporary Learning Spaces offer a spacious and purposeful setting, with flexible furniture to accommodate various teaching and learning approaches, in a space which is twice the size of a standard classroom. Each CLS is thoughtfully divided into purposeful zones that cater for two classes and two teachers, ensuring that the learning environment remains focused and conducive to concentration. Sophisticated design ensures that these classrooms are acoustically optimised, creating an environment where students can engage with their studies without intrusive noise distraction.

Enhancing Teaching Practices: The implementation of Contemporary Learning Spaces is not only about the physical space but also about elevating teaching practices. Our dedicated educators have undertaken a micro-credential program to master the art of co-teaching in these sophisticated environments. They have learned how to utilize the space to its full potential, fostering collaboration, presentation skills, and effective communication in both small and large group settings.

Differentiating from Open Classrooms: We recognize that the term "open, flexible learning spaces" has been used to describe similar learning environments. However, we want to clarify that our CLS are distinctly different from the traditional open classrooms that have earned themselves a bad name over the past few decades. Open classrooms, often created without considering sound-absorbent walls, can be oversized and challenging to adapt for focused learning. Unfortunately, these spaces were usually designed without consulting educators, leading to situations where the layout did not meet the learning needs of students.

At Chevalier College, we've taken a different approach. We've combined thoughtful design, educator consultation, and a commitment to innovative teaching practices to create CLS that support effective learning and teaching.

Many of us at Chevalier are excited about the possibilities these CLS offer our students, and we look forward to the positive impact they will have on the students' educational journey.

Thank you for your ongoing support as we continue to evolve and enhance the learning experience at Chevalier College.
