LEARNING AT SACRED HEART

This week, some of our Year 5 students had the opportunity to attend the M3cubed: Marvellous Magnificent Minds student conference at St Columba's College in Essendon. The purpose of the conference was to challenge and extend students. The students had a variety of experiences beginning the day with a presentation from Monash University Professor Denise Chapman who was inspiring and entertaining for the students.

The students participated in two sessions where they were required to use their reasoning and problem solving skills which included;

  • using a 1m squared piece of cardboard to and build and design a chair.
  • create a piece of clothing or fashion accessory.
  • and use a single piece of A4 paper to hold a cup of concrete

The highlight of the day was their packed lunch!

FAITH LIFE INQUIRY

School Closure Day - Monday 14th August

The staff were led through a day of 'hands on' learning and forward inquiry designing with the Traces of Learning consultants, Gemma and Jarryd.    They led us through using authentic processes, tools, and experiences that empowered us to design inquiry learning for term 4.

Throughout the day our educators explored how to transform our P-6 educational setting by :

  • Designing intentions through concepts and curriculum
  • Experiencing rich provocations
  • Creating visible learning through learning walls and documentation
  • Observing how exciting and inviting learning spaces are set up

The educators look forward to continuing to develop and deliver rich, curious and connected learning experiences that cultivates agency, deep thinking and innovation in our students!

First Eucharist

First Eucharist is considered one of the holiest and most important occasions in a Catholic's life. It means that a person has received the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time.

The word ‘communion’ means to be united with and we believe that in Holy Communion we are united in a special way with Jesus Christ.

Over the next 3 Sundays at the Sacred Heart Church at 10am, our Year 4 students receive Jesus for the first time. As they celebrate this very special sacrament, please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Good luck our Year 4 students who will be making this First Eucharist this weekend:

Reasoning & Explaining Thinking in Mathematics

Many students like to find the answers quickly and don't always like to show their thinking and reasoning. Students are always encouraged to show and explain their thinking and reasoning is emphasised in the maths curriculum as one of the four proficiencies.

Students are applying mathematical reasoning when they:

  • explain their thinking,
  • deduce and justify strategies used and conclusions reached,
  • adapt the known to the unknown,
  • transfer learning from one context to another,
  • prove that something is true or false,
  • and compare and contrast related ideas and explain their choices.

Here are some websites with activities for students to challenge their thinking and develop their reasoning skills.

BOOK WEEK CELEBRATIONS

Next week we will be celebrating Book Week with the theme 'Read, Grow, Inspire'.  Each year since 1945 the CBCA (Children's Book Council of Australia) has brought children and books together across Australia through Children's Book Week. We will be spending one glorious week celebrating books and Australian children's authors and illustrators. This link will take you to all the shortlisted books for 2023.  A big thank you to our wonderful library educator Jeanette for all her hard work in exposing our students to these amazing books.

At Sacred Heart we will be celebrating this  through the following exciting events:

Caught Reading Competition:

Children are invited to submit to Jeannette a photo of themselves reading a book in an unusual place.  Last day for submitting will be on Wednesday the 23rd of August.

Cosy Reading Afternoon:

Studentscan bring in their favourite book, cosy dressing gown, oodie or blanket, slippers or teddy and curl up nice and cosy. With a crackling fireplace displayed on classroom whiteboards, it will be a lovely experience.

Book Week Parade

We will continue with the festivities with our much loved day of dressing up as a character from one of our favourite books and participate in a whole school parade. This will commence at 8:50  and parents are invited to stay and watch. Parents will also be invited into classrooms where you can share a favourite book of your own to the class.   Check out this link if you are stuck for ideas!

Performance

On Thursday the 31st of August, 'Way Too Cool' will be presenting a whole school performance focusing on the CBCA nominated books. Unfortunately due to space limitations parent will not be able to attend.
