Literacy Update

Last Friday saw the celebration of Book Week come to life. Thank you to everyone behind the scenes (amazing parents) who helped bring so many amazing book character costumes to life. It was such a happy day at SKiPPS watching the students in their costumes and listening to them talk about their favourite books.

It was wonderful to celebrate the 2023 shortlisted CBCA books that the SKiPPS community voted for as their favourites. The different colour stickers represent the different year levels.

Whilst the CBCA choose their own winning books of the year, at SKiPPS, our 2023 Children's Books of the year are;

(drum roll please...)

  • Best picture story book - Frank's Red Hat by Sean Avery
  • Best early childhood book - Lionel and Me by Corinne Fenton
  • Best non-fiction book - DEEP: Dive into Hidden Worlds by Jess McGeachin
  • Best illustrator - The Best Hiding Place by Jane Godwin

Author Visits

In the spirit of Book Week, SKiPPS have been celebrating our love of literature with lots of fabulous author visits. This week, we welcomed author of the 2023 shortlisted book, Naturopolis, Deborah Frenkel.

Deborah worked with the students in Foundation – Year 2 where she shared her story and talked to the students about looking closely within their very own environments for beauty and ideas to construct a story. As always, the SKiPPS students displayed their school value of CURIOSITY by engaging in the talk and asking Deb insightful questions.

A very big thank you to Deborah for giving up her time to come and talk to our students.

CONGRATULATIONS to Alessia D from Year 4, who was a finalist in the 2023 Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee.  Alessia was selected as being in the top 100 spellers in the state and was invited back to participate in the Spelling Bee finals. Alessia has completed her ‘finals’ round and we are now waiting to hear if she continues through to the National Final. What a thrill for Alessia, we are very proud.

Thank you to the amazing parents that continue to help us out with contacting. We have made great progress with the many new books. There is still a small amount of Literature Circle novels to be covered. If you are interested, please see Jac.

Some students have written a recount about their Book Week dress up. I hope enjoy reading the 4 pieces of writing below.
