Book Week
Last Friday's dress-up day was such a joyful way for us to wrap-up our annual celebration of Book Week.
The assembly parade allowed each class to get up and strut their stuff on the stage and we were blown away by the effort that families and children had gone to to become their favourite book characters.
2023 Book Week at SKiPPS was bigger and better than ever and provided such a wonderful opportunity and inspiration to engage with rich, interesting books, meet with four different children's authors and get lost in a world of creativity and delicious language.
I would like to thank Jac Morphy, our Literacy Leading Teacher and Chantel Jose, our High-Ability Practice Leader for their huge efforts to organise the visits, performances, books and competitions that made Book Week such a great success.
Lume Excursions
This week saw all of our classes having the wonderful opportunity to take part in a whole-school excursion to the current Lume exhibition 'Connection'.
Born from an idea to celebrate First Nations art and music and give back to its artist communities, this experience tells the story of our country's rich cultural history.
The most expansive tapestry of First Peoples' art ever assembled, Connection brings to life over 650 works from 110 visual and musical artists in the world's largest digital art gallery,
On Wednesday of this week, our Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 classes travelled by tram to the exhibition and had a great time engaging with the moving, interactive, larger than life installations and learning more about the artists and the messages and themes behind their art.
On Friday, our younger classes in Foundation and Year 1/2 will visit the gallery by bus.
As well as being an amazing experience in its own right and a chance to engage with the important theme of Aboriginal and First Nations histories and cultures, the excursions will serve as common inspiration for our Celebration of the Arts evening 'Luminoso' taking place next term.
Thanks to our Visual Arts teacher Chantel Jose for arranging this whole-school experience for our students.
Thank you to SKiPPS parent Nicole Chapman for taking these amazing photos of the Year 5/6 students at the exhibition.
Celebration of the Arts - artwork
Talking of Celebration of the Arts (COTA), we are now working hard in the lead up to this event early next term. The theme this year is 'Luminoso' (Italian for light) and the night will be based around visual art and performance on the theme of light, illumination, glowing and sparkling.
The event is the high point of our school year and is an amazing community event.
The work comes together on the evening (5pm on Thursday 2nd November) and the school becomes a combined art show, performance space and community party. All classes, orchestras and choirs perform to the audience, all students display their artwork and there is food and drink for sale.
As has become tradition in recent years, the wonderfully talented SKiPPS parent Bianca Loiacono has designed the poster for COTA 2023 in her wonderful style. We thank for her donating her time and talent for the school.
Put the date in your diary now and get ready for the highpoint of the school year.
St Kilda Mums 'Coats for Kids' Thank you
This week we received a lovely 'Certificate of Appreciation' from St Kilda Mums for our community's amazing response to their recent winter 'Coats for Kids' appeal.
Whilst I lost count of the number of coats that were donated at the school office, it was a lot. The kind donations from our SKiPPS families will help in making a difference to the lives of those children and families that St Kilda Mums support.
Thanks to everyone who got involved and donated coats.
Reminder - Overdue Library Books
As the end of term is nearing, all library books must be returned as soon as possible, and prior to Wednesday 13th September.
Every book not returned means that other students do not have the opportunity to borrow.
Notices have been sent home for students who have overdue books prior to Term 3.
If you believe your child/ren have returned book/s, please contact our librarian, Carloyn via email at carolyn.hill2@education.vic.gov.au.
Occasionally books may not have been scanned into system upon their return. Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Lost Property
With only a couple of weeks to go until the end of term, we have amassed quite the collection of winter clothing, water bottles, swimming goggles and even a yoga mat, over the last 8 weeks.
Just before pick up at the end of the day, we ask all parents to check the Lost Property collection by the piano in the Quadrangle. All items that remain in Week 10, will be donated to a local charity.
Sub Committee Meetings
Our school has a number of permanent working groups called sub-committees. These groups are made up of staff members and dedicated parents who meet ten times a year with a focus to make our school a better place.
Sub-committees are open for anyone to join and rely on the energy, ideas and hard work of parents to improve the school experience for all of our students.
The groups are open for all parents to join and contribute to so feel free to come along to any of the following meetings.
