With many of the Middle Years students being involved in the musical “Mamma Mia!” last week, I thought it was a prime time to celebrate accomplishments. By celebrating successes, this activates the brain's reward system and these achievements, both big and small, are crucial for boosting motivation, increasing students’ self-esteem, and reinforcing positive behaviours.
It's not just about acknowledging a job well done, but also about reinforcing the effort, persistence, and dedication that led to this success. If we skip these celebrations, it can have a reverse effect by increasing stress and the risk of burnout, harming student motivation and wellbeing. By students recognising their small wins, this helps them solidify any lessons learned in the process, fostering intentional future actions. Friends can help celebrate others’ successes, as celebrating achievements also fosters social support, enhancing relationships and feelings of connection to not only their peers, but also the school itself.
I hope that the Middle Years students have had the chance to celebrate their recent successes, both big or small, and have given themselves the time to bask in their own sense of awesomeness!
