Leadership

"If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader." John Quincy Adams

This week, all Year 11 students have been encouraged to apply for School Prefect, Boarding, and Co-Curricular Captaincy positions. Students are required to submit a letter of application and a resume.

The entire process for selecting each of our school leaders (prefects) is, in my opinion, exhaustive and transparent, and one which is unique to schools of our relatively small size. We conduct a nine-stage operation, as follows:

  1. Each student from Years 7 to 12 is invited to vote for House and School Captains.
  2. Staff are invited to cast votes for School Captains.
  3. Every Year 11 student is encouraged to submit a formal application, together with a resume, to their Head of House.
  4. Students who apply for a Prefect position are to present a two-minute speech to their House, and students shortlisted for School Captain will present to the school.
  5. Every Year 11 student is formally interviewed by a Head of House.
  6. Students shortlisted by the Head of House to be School Captain or SRC President are formally interviewed by the Principal and Deputy Principal.
  7. The Pastoral Care Committee, consisting of the Principal, Deputy Principal, Head of Middle Years, Head of Year 12, Director of Boarding, and Heads of House, meets to make recommendations for successful candidates.
  8. The Principal appoints the successful candidates on the recommendation of the committee.
  9. Unsuccessful candidates are invited to speak to the Head of House to discuss their application and to receive guidance.

Where possible, we endeavour to share leadership roles and responsibilities amongst the entire Year 11 group. Captaincies of sports, music, and drama, to name a few, provide other leadership opportunities for students who may not have been successful in the selection of Prefect positions.
