Around Our Level
Last week we celebrated Book Week across the whole school, with students coming dressed as their favourite book character, a special assembly, and a parade. It was wonderful to see so many amazing costumes. In Prep, we introduced the children to a ‘Book Tasting’, which was lots of fun. The room was set up with tablecloths and a collection of books showcasing a variety of genres, such as fiction, nonfiction, magazines, newspapers, fairy tales, and poetry/rhyming books. We discussed special features of books (such as glossaries, index pages, and contents pages), looked at the special features of newspapers and magaziness, looked at how most fairy tales begin with ‘once upon a time'. Students were given a passport to be stamped as they sampled each genre. The children also drew a picture of their favourite book character and discussed their favourite books.
On Friday our Prep students, Miss Ross, Miss Pratt, and students from 3/4C and Mrs Macrae, began planting our seedlings in our school veggie patch as part of our $1,200 EACH Community Grant ‘Growing Together School Garden’ project'. Students were involved in weeding the garden beds, digging them over, planting seeds (including peas, beans, potatoes, spring onions, kale, carrots, and some herbs), assembling two arbours, mulching the garden beds with pea straw, and mulching the area surrounding the raised garden beds. We also planted some companion plants, such as lavender and potted colour, to beautify the area. It certainly is starting to look amazing and is a real asset for our school. As part of the project, we plan to harvest and cook the produce that we have grown to promote an awareness of healthy eating.
In Literacy, we have been learning about the short ‘a’, short ‘o’, and short ‘I’ sounds in words. Students have also been learning to write a recount about their weekend using their knowledge of sounding out.
In Maths, we have been learning about subtraction by using number lines to jump back and concrete materials (such as counters and unifix) to model simple subtraction equations. We have created classroom anchor charts with vocabulary and have explored these throughout the sequence of lessons. The children loved working on their ‘hot chocolate subtraction’ posters, which are displayed in their classroom.
In Geography, we have been learning about special places that have important meaning to us. We have discussed our special places, illustrated pictures of our special places, and discussed why we like to spend time in them.
In Wellbeing, we have been learning how to seek help and assistance, both in the classroom and the school yard. We looked at photos of people who can help us at school when we need support, such as teachers, office staff, yard duty teachers, ES staff, and their peers. We undertook team building exercises in the classroom, which required all participants to work together to support each other. It certainly was a lot of fun, as both Prep classes worked together.
We would like to also formally thank Miss Kayla Pratt on the completion of her final 4-week teaching placement in Prep B. You have certainly made a big impact with the children and will be missed. Kayla has been planning and teaching sequences of maths lessons, which have been fun and engaging. She is an exceptional teacher, and we wish her all the very best with completing her studies and for her future teaching career. A big thank you Kalya for all the additional work that you have done in our classroom over your 8 weeks at Yarra Road Primary School.
Students are nominated by their teachers to receive a certificate of acknowledgment. The below students' certificates will be presented at our next assembly.
