Book Week
The students have a very exciting week with Book Week. We started with a Whole School Assembly on Monday including our famous Book Parade. The students have all enjoyed participating in the VPS book swap organised by Mr Hoskin and his Literacy team. The students have had the opportunity to write about their favourite book or book character. We have had a visit from Mark Wilson a talented illustrator and author, with a passion for sustainability. For Show and Tell, students have been talking about their favourite book.
What's on in the Classroom
Literacy
In the past couple of weeks students have been learning to use different opening sentences, like using a question or trying to engage the reader. They have been learning to edit their writing, demonstrating their understanding of re-reading their work and editing for more interetsing word choices.
Mathematics
In Mathematics this week the students have continued to develop skills of using a variety of strategies, eg doubles, double doubles and skip counting. They have been using arrays and groups of items to assist in multiplication and division number sentences. They have also continued with Location, making treasure maps and asking other students to follow their instructions, using language of North or left/right, to find the treasure. Ask your child to give you directions around the house!
In weeks 7 and 8 we are going to be learning more about Calendars and Fractions.
Inquiry
last week students discovered how pulleys work, they had lots of fun in the playground testing their pulley system out.
Friday Focus
In Friday Focus the students got to choose which suffixes fit different base words and the spelling rule associated with them, eg stop/stopped, time/timed. Students are also learning to add suffixes that change the spelling of the word eg, hurry/ hurried, busy/busiest. And using the suffix pre at the beginning of a word for the meaning of before, eg preschool, prepare and prehistoric.
We have also challenged our students to write interesting words like putrid and catastrophic in their free writing.
